Regulating onshore major hazard sites

At HSE, we work with one goal in mind – to help keep Britain’s workforce safe and healthy. We are the independent regulator for occupational health and safety in Great Britain, and our work touches virtually every sector of UK industry. We don’t just inspect workplaces and implement the law, we campaign for better H&S; practice, craft and review guidance and regulations, provide specialist products and services, and produce crucial research and statistics.

The role

You’ll help to prevent major accidents involving flammable and toxic substances, through the regulation of onshore major hazard sites, including pipelines. Working closely with other specialists you could be involved in developing methods and standards for assessing major hazard risk, carrying out technical risk analysis at specific sites, representing HSE at land use planning appeals and inquiries, or commissioning new research.

Your background

As this is a highly specialised role, you’ll need sound experience in assessing risk within the onshore major hazards industry. This includes using current risk assessment techniques and tools, along with knowledge of major accident hazard modelling. You’ll also need evidence of strong analytical skills and impactful decision-making, as well as excellent powers of communication. A degree (or equivalent) in a science, engineering, mathematics or another relevant subject area is essential. You should also hold, or be ready to work towards, chartered membership of a relevant professional institution, and possess a full UK driving licence.

Rewards

There’s a lot to look forward to here beyond the generous Civil Service pension and our commitment to flexible working. We put a high value on ongoing personal and professional development and offer access to learning opportunities tailored to your role. You can also expect annual leave of least 25 days.

Our work affects people’s lives across the UK, and it’s important that our teams reflect the diversity of the society we work to protect. So we look for people to bring different skills, perspectives and experience from all walks of life, and particularly welcome BAME, disabled and LGBT+ applicants, currently underrepresented in this discipline within HSE.

Please submit your CV, with a suitability statement of up to 500 words, outlining relevant experience and explaining how you meet the requirements of the role.
