Job summary
The Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW) Bowel Screening Programme is seeking to recruit a full time Specialist Screening Practitioners (SSPs) to join our team at Royal United hospital, Bath.
The bowel screening service addresses the needs of individuals currently aged between 54 and 75 who have an abnormal test result from a home screening kit.
Plans are in place to extend this age group to 50 over the next year.
SSPs are expected to work autonomously guiding patients to make informed decisions at all stages of the screening pathway, whilst adhering to Trust and Bowel cancer screening policies and protocols.
Applicants must be a registered general nurse with appropriate knowledge and experience.
Specific training will be provided.
Our programme delivers screening services from three hospitals - Bath, Swindon, and Salisbury. Travelling between sites will be required, so a full driving license would be advantageous.
Work patterns are primarily in normal office hours. Bank holiday working is not usually required
Main duties of the job
You will take overall responsibility for patients within the bowel screening programme ensuring they are appropriately assessed, management plans are in place and the care they receive is effective, compassionate and of the best quality.
The post holder will be expected to work autonomously as a Specialist Screening Practitioner for the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme while collaborating appropriately with members of the multi-disciplinary team and staff at other sites, ensuring that the screening population of Bath, Swindon and Wiltshire receive an equal and diverse Bowel Cancer Screening Service.
This role is part of the National Screening Programme and subject to significant national audit, therefore it requires good IT skills and attention to detail.
Specific training and induction is provided, along with mandatory attendance at university for the completion of the Specialist Screening Practitioner module at level 6 / 7.

Essential
- The post holder will be a first level registered nurse with a Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree in Nursing and have evidence of continuing professional development to post-graduate diploma level.
- Excellent written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills must be demonstrated. Effective inter-professional communication must be proven.
Evidence of being caring and compassionate with a good understanding of managing patients with complex needs Good organisational and time management skills Good self-awareness Ability to develop professional relationships.
Good skills will be necessary, and the post holder must be competent with data input handling and audit.
Desirable
- Previous experience as a Specialist Screening Practitioner is not essential but experience in health promotion, colorectal cancer and gastroenterology specialties would be beneficial.
- Ability to travel to and provide cover at all sites.
- Ability to think creatively and contribute to service improvement initiatives
