Job overview

This post is for ENT surgeons approaching the end of or having recently completed their higher surgical training. It is expected that the successful applicant will gain competency in all of Head and Neck surgery including the management of complications.

This includes complex ablative head and neck, thyroid,





parathyroid, and robotic surgery. In addition, the successful applicant will receive training in head & neck ultrasound.

To be considered for the post, applicants must be senior trainees (either Post CCT, or in the final years of training).

Trainees in a national training scheme will need to seek approval from their training program director to take up this post outside of their training program).

Applicants will also be expected to have had basic and advanced training in Head & Neck Surgery. Demonstration of a commitment to training in Head and Neck Surgery, good communication and team working skills are essential.

Other experience in the form of audit or research is desirable.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

- MRCS or Equivalent
- FRCS (ORL-HNS)
- Full registration with GMC

Desirable criteria

- Higher additional qualification
- Presentation / Publications

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria

- Applicants must be senior trainees (either Post CCT or in the final year of training)
- Ability to deal with general Head and Neck and ENT emergencies
- Evidence of participation in research and continued professional development
- Logbook indicating validated experience of appropriate range and number of clinical procedures

Desirable criteria

- Research in Head and Neck
- Attendance at relevant ENT training courses






- Experience of developing effective and collaborative working relationships

Skills / Ability and Knowledge

Essential criteria

- Competence in pre-operative and post-operative management of Head and Neck surgical patients
- Good organisation
- Ability to organise own learning and time
- A keen interest in the development of teaching methods and practical teaching skills applied to ENT

Desirable criteria

- Other specific medical interests
- Qualification in teaching such as Teach the Trainers’ course

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria

- Ability to cope with stressful situations, undertake responsibility and be a team player
- Enthusiastic and approachable
- Ability to keep good medical records and communicate with other hospital departments and primary care






- Ability to understand and communication with patients and colleagues.
- Demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues as set out by the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2014)
- Ability to travel between clinical sites
- Ability to undertake research projects and audit

Desirable criteria

- Show interest in investigative, audit and research work outside immediate clinical responsibility
- Experience of change management
