Job description

Public Affairs Associate

Salary : National ranging from £43,300 £57,000 and London from £46,400 £60,000 per annum

The team / department

The role of the Communications division is to manage and promote the FCA's reputation. The Public Affairs team is the interface between the FCA and Parliament, advising the organisation on how to respond and engage with politicians and helping to ensure public confidence in our work by building good relationships in the public affairs area.

This is a dynamic and interesting role that interacts with every part of the organisation and at every level.







What you will be doing (the role)

Building information from networks across Parliament and in the wider public affairs arena to interpret political developments for the organisation whilst explaining FCA policy and action to these people and responding to their enquiries

Understanding the work of the FCA in your policy portfolio, identify emerging risks and opportunities, and providing guidance to senior FCA staff, including the Chief Executive and the Chair

Acting as a briefing function, working closely with the team and the organisation to prepare senior management for public and parliamentary events

Understanding and explaining the political decisions that affect the financial services sector and work of the FCA to senior members of staff

Supporting the MPs' letters process

Leading projects that ensure the FCA is communicating its work effectively to those involved in financial services policy

You will help shape the interaction between senior policy makers, parliamentarians and regulators in the financial services sector

You will hone your public affairs skills to ensure the work of the FCA is understood and the view of politicians and Parliament are effectively conveyed to the organisation

You will advise senior management across the FCA on how to operate in the parliamentary environment

The skills and experience you will have

Minimum

We are a signatory to the Government’s Disability Confident scheme. This means that we will offer an interview to disabled candidates entering under the scheme, should they meet the minimum criteria for a role.







Experience in a relevant environment such as public affairs consultancy, in-house public affairs function or in Parliament

Experience of managing and influencing political and / or other senior stakeholders

Excellent written language skills

Essential

Excellent verbal communications skills to brief senior colleagues

Strong knowledge of the political landscape and parliamentary procedure

Ability to build strong relationships with a range of stakeholders

Experience of leading project teams to deliver outcomes

Experience in gathering of intelligence from multiple sources to identify risks and trends within the political environment

Experience of working on a number of areas of policy simultaneously

Sound judgment, effective decision making and personal accountability
