As a Dental Technician focusing on Prosthetic Rehabilitation, you will work with our excellent multidisciplinary team to provide high quality services to Wolverhampton and the Black Country.
Main duties of the job
The Maxillofacial Prosthetics Department at New Cross Hospital works in conjunction with the multidisciplinary clinical services of Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery,
Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, ENT and Respiratory Medicine.
The post holder will work within the multidisciplinary laboratory team to support the provision of Maxillofacial, Dental and Orthodontic services within the Head and Neck Department at The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, working closely with the restorative dentistry team.
The post holder will work to a consistently high standard to manufacture and maintain a broad range of highly complex custom-made medical devices for prosthetic rehabilitation as well as provide support to the Maxillofacial, Orthodontic, ENT and Respiratory Medicine services.

Job responsibilities
Technical and Clinical Skills and Knowledge
- Construct a range of complex removable dental appliances including full and partial dentures, implant dentures, cobalt chrome dentures and obturators.
- Knowledge of implant systems and their use within prosthodontic rehabilitation.
- Use CAD / CAM technology to produce custom made dental appliances and devices as well as maintain dental records.
- Work collaboratively with maxillofacial and oral surgeons on the design and construction of surgical cover plates.
- Construct a range of custom-made dental appliances such as Hard and Soft BRAs and Mandibular Advancement Splints for treatment of Sleep Apnoea.
- Assist in the provision of services for Orthodontics.
- Assist in the provision of services for Maxillofacial Prosthetics.
- Participate in the formulation and delivery of unique treatment plans.
- Provide clinical and technical support and liaise with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Participate in multidisciplinary clinics.
- Advise other healthcare professionals within scope of ones own knowledge and practice within the context of dental prosthetics and technology.
- Help develop new techniques and collaborate on joint clinical / surgical procedures.
- Follow departmental policy and guidelines regarding cross-infection and carry out aseptic technique as required in the clinic, operating theatre, and laboratory environments.
- Communicate clinical and technical information regarding the long-term management of a medical device.
Research and Development
- Participate in audit and investigations to facilitate problem finding or identifying areas of good practice.
- Evaluate relevant evidence published in scientific journals for sound research methodology and statistical analysis.
- Participate in further training as required by the development of the post.
- Maintain Continuing Professional Development as part of Professional Registration.
Organisational and Managerial
- Prioritise, plan and co-ordinate own workload to meet deadlines and ensure the provision of high-quality services.
- Assist in supervision and development of junior staff.
- Assist in maintaining patient records and enter relevant details of materials used.
- Assist in maintaining records of work undertaken by the department.
- Participate in maintaining stock of consumables in the Maxillofacial Prosthetic Department and associated clinical areas.
- Assist in the routine maintenance of department and equipment.
- Observe and comply with current Health and safety and COSHH legislation.
- Safely handle chemicals used within the department.
- Be responsible for safe use of clinical and laboratory equipment.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the post.
- Regularly update own mandatory training as required.
