We are seeking an enthusiastic experienced clinical scientist or biomedical scientist to join our department in providing a high-quality clinical biochemistry service. Our department is based at Bristol Royal Infirmary situated in the City Centre and comprises of an integrated blood sciences automated laboratory with Immunochemistry and Metabolic, Neuroendocrine and Nutrition (MNN) specialist sections. We provide a wide range of biochemical services for our Trust and primary care as well as a regional and national service to external users for specialist assays.

The successful candidate will work closely with the clinical lead for paediatric and metabolic biochemistry and MNN section seniors to develop the sections repertoire of diagnostic assays by tandem mass spectrometry and support the provision of the current specialist biochemistry service.

Main duties of the job

- Assist the clinical lead and MNN section seniors in the full validation of the existing MSMS assay repertoire on the new tandem mass spectrometer.






- Develop new assays to be implemented on the MSMS analyser.
- Fully validate to UKAS 15189:2022 standards all new MSMS assays.
- Keep detailed records of method development work.
- Develop all appropriate documentation to establish the new assays for routine clinical use.
- Cascade training to relevant staff to perform the new MSMS assays for routine clinical use including training staff to be able to undertake appropriate troubleshooting and maintenance tasks.
- Support the training and development of staff on all MNN section equipment where appropriate.
- Assist MNN section senior biomedical scientist and clinical staff in the provision of the current service with troubleshooting of existing assays across the section.






- Perform highly complex biochemical testing of clinical samples for the expanded and current MNN repertoire when appropriate.
- Assist MNN section seniors to take corrective action when quality control or assurance procedures indicate loss of performance of laboratory instruments or methods.
- Support MNN section staff and the wider department in quality management activities to support accreditation of the service to UKAS 15189:2022 standards.

Person specification
Qualifications and Training

- 1st or 2nd class degree in Biochemistry or related subject.
- State registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Clinical Scientist or Biomedical Scientist.
- PhD or equivalent in relevant subject.

Knowledge and Experience







- Wide-ranging practical experience in manual and automated techniques used in a clinical biochemistry service.
- Comprehensive theoretical and practical understanding of analytical techniques used in a specialist clinical biochemistry service, particularly chromatography and mass spectrometry.
- Extensive experience in mass spectrometry and chromatographic techniques.
- Extensive experience in method development.
- Experience in validation and verification of clinical biochemistry methods including associated documentation to fulfil UKAS 15189:2022 standards.
- Experience of research and development, demonstrated by completion of a research dissertation as part of an under- or post-graduate degree,





‘in-house’ written reports and/or presentations at scientific meetings.
- Experience of Quality management system in a clinical biochemistry service.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures as they affect the handling of potentially hazardous chemicals and biological samples in the laboratory.
- Able to communicate and work effectively with clinical and non-clinical staff of all grades both within and outside the department.
- Able to work as a team and relate to all staff.
- Able to operate effective personal time management both on a day-to-day basis and when performing ongoing work tasks.
- Dependable.

Skills and Abilities

- Specialist expertise in clinical and analytical biochemistry obtained through substantial in-service training and experience in a clinical diagnostic laboratory.






- Numerate and able to evaluate complex biochemical information including statistical analysis of method development data.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing complex scientific information with both specialist and non-specialist staff.
- Ability to organise and deliver the training of others in analytical methods used in the section.
- Ability to perform accurately complex manual and automated analytical techniques including highly developed physical skills requiring hand-eye co-ordination and accuracy when pipetting samples and weighing small volumes of hazardous chemicals and/or clinical material.
- Computer skills including use of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, internet and literature search programmes.
