Harborough District Children and Young People’s Charity

Market Harborough

Trustees needed to oversee the work of HCYC in delivering play and youth work activities and support to vulnerable and isolated children and young people across Harborough District, South Leicestershire, and beyond where appropriate.

What difference will you make?

Impact of the Opportunity The charity cannot operate without a Board of Trustees and keeping our Board membership sufficient in numbers and relevant in types of skills and experience of those involved is imperative to maintaining good charity governance. The trustee role brings a crucial level of support to the senior staff team, offers guidance with issues which need resolving, and provides alternative views and unique insights which enhance the development of the charity.

We also have an opportunity to include trustees who represent the communities we support, to enable us to ensure that the charity is operating in an inclusive way. What’s in it for the Volunteer? Being a charity trustee offers a number of benefits It can be a developmental opportunity to enhance a career path, giving a chance to be directly involved in high level governance and management of charity affairs, and an opportunity to learn about the legal and procedural issues relating to both charities, managing staff, and delivering projects and services in a social and community context. It is an opportunity to support the local community and a large number of local people who benefit from the charity's work. It provides a social opportunity to potentially meet people with similar interests, concerns and values.

What are we looking for?

Commitment to HCYC Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort Strategic vision Good,

independent judgement Ability to think creatively Willingness to speak their mind Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of trusteeship Ability to work effectively as a member of a team Abiding by Nolan's seven principles of public life selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership (see attachment for more detail). Skills Selected Finance – Finance Management Organisational Development and Strategy – Governance, Strategic Development and Planning Fundraising – Charity Sector Fundraising Health and wellbeing - Young People's mental health

What will you be doing?

Description The Trustee role involves developing an excellent oversight of the work being conducted by the charity and being able to contribute to the ongoing delivery and future development of the charity. Trustee Board meetings are held every three months, lasting approximately 2 hours, and are held on weekdays at a suitable time somewhere between 9am and 6pm to suit current trustees' commitments, at The Symington Building in Market Harborough. All trustees should attend each meeting in order to hear updates on the charity's work from the senior staff, to approve the charity's work, and to approve and influence the future development of the charity. There may be additional opportunities for trustees to become involved with specific tasks or subcommittees from time to time, subject to the needs of the charity, or in response to situations as they arise.

Trustee Description We are looking for volunteers with one or more of a range of skills for the trustee role, from experience and knowledge of the issues affecting children and young people, to skills and experience in managing finances, fundraising, policy development, publicity and marketing, and communications and information technology among others. Even if you feel you may not have any of these areas of expertise, we are still interested in people who have a passion for ensuring that vulnerable and isolated children and young people are being supported. We welcome people from a range of backgrounds and experiences and have an aim to maintain a diverse Board of Trustees and one which is also representative of the different communities we support.

Trustees must be 18 years or over.
