Mid Yorkshire Orthopaedic services serves a population of over 500,000 in West Yorkshire, England. The department has subspecialties of lower limb arthroplasty surgery, soft tissue knee surgery, foot and ankle surgery, paediatric orthopaedic surgery and upper limb surgery. Mid Yorkshire Hospitals also delivers a 24 hour consultant led trauma service, our multi-professional teams co-ordinate the care for patients with trauma injuries.

We are seeking a Locum Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon to join our team of 23 Orthopaedic Consultants providing a range of acute and elective services. This is a new post in paediatric orthopaedics and trauma and is part of a planned expansion of paediatric orthopaedics services.







The successful applicant will be involved in delivering an elective paediatric orthopaedic service and trauma provision, with the option to participate in a general orthopaedics on-call rota (1 in 16). The Trust currently has 3 paediatric consultants including one as part of a hub and spoke arrangement with Leeds.

This new post is to develop an already established unit, which includes:

- Daily specialist paediatric fracture clinic with a virtual component.
- Ponseti Service
- Developmental hip dysplasia service
- Specialist outreach cerebral palsy clinics and
- Supervision of physio led normal variant clinics.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the post will include:

- Keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition.
- Involve patients (and/or carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment
- Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC)





and comply in particular with the GMCs guidance on Good Medical Practice as amended or substituted from time to time.

Option for Urgent and Emergency Care duties including out-of-hours on-call schedules will take due account of the provisions of working time regulations and safe working

Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10PA timetable. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service.

Examples may include formal teaching responsibilities or departmental leadership roles

Office facilities & secretarial support will be provided to support this

This post is offered on a full time (10 PA)





basis although less than full time applications will be considered.

Duties will be based primarily on our Wakefield (Pinderfields) site although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites, for which adequate provision for travel time will be included in the job plan. The main duties of the post will include:

Person Specification
Experience
Essential

- Wide range of experience in orthopaedics
- ATLS provider






- Fully accredited by college and acceptable to college representative
- Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of an Orthopaedic Service
- To share with colleagues the responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Orthopaedic Service
- Teaching and training of junior staff, medical students
- To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
- To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)
- Equivalent of at least six months within orthopaedics dealing with children.
- Logbook evidence of high-volume General TRAUMA surgery
- Ability to work closely with consultant colleagues & wider MDT






- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with colleagues and patients
- Ability to contribute to the development of the Trust, the Unit and its services
- Ability to contribute to the management process within the Trust and the Unit.
- Demonstrates understanding of need for personal development in self and others.

Desirable

- Elective experience in Childrens orthopaedics including neurodisability.
- In depth experience in managing all facets Paediatric trauma and orthopaedic related infections.
- Emphasis on complex paediatric trauma but ability to treat routine general orthopaedic trauma Hip fractures, long bone fractures, initial management of fractures/dislocations of other joints.
- Management & leadership experience
- Evidence of involvement in teaching and training in Orthopaedics
- Interest in developing / improving trauma and elective pathways
- Fellowship in Paediatric Orthopaedics
