Job description

What we’re looking for

The Lloyd's Register Naval Centre of Expertise (NCoE) in Bristol delivers a unique and essential service to Shipyards, Navies, and LR colleagues worldwide, supporting the growth, development, and delivery of the global LR Naval Business.

As part of the NCoE, the Projects Team provides technical consultancy that aids in the development, selection, and application of standards and certification of naval vessels, particularly during the acquisition stages, for Naval authorities, Shipyards, Designers, and Acquisition Teams.

In the UK, the NCoE is actively involved in frameworks supporting the Ministry of Defence (MoD) through Naval Design Partnering (NDP) and Engineering Design Partnering (EDP)

contracts.

These contracts focus on providing effective and responsive support to the MoD, especially in standards management and development, as well as in delivering specialist engineering and core certification services.

Locally and globally, the Projects Team offers high-quality and valued support to navies, shipyards, and local LR offices engaged in the procurement, construction, and delivery of naval assets to Lloyd's Class.

We are currently engaged with multiple stakeholders in future naval projects, providing an opportunity to influence and support critical decision-making processes early in the procurement cycle.

This role within the Projects Team involves managing and delivering complex and challenging tasks using a mix of skills and resources from within the candidate's competency and capability, as well as from across the Lloyd's Register Group or industry partners.

With the increasing demand on the team to support the rapid development of the LR naval business,

these opportunities will not always require traditional classification solutions.

The ability to combine and construct service offerings to meet specific customer requirements will necessitate innovative thinking and problem-solving.

The candidate is expected to contribute to this work and support the development and delivery of these tasks.

Additionally, the candidate will support the team’s ongoing work, including contributions to the International Naval Safety Association (INSA), the LR Naval Ship Technical Committee (NSTC), naval safety cases, and the emerging area of autonomous vessel assurance.

The role will allow for the identification and development of similar opportunities in line with the candidate’s experience and interests.

The NCoE Projects Team offers a unique opportunity to develop and deliver service offerings to a range of naval stakeholders, known for providing practical solutions to complex naval problems effectively and efficiently.

The successful candidate will join a small team with a respected reputation in this field.

What we offer you

- Competitive Salary
- Relocation assistance will be considered if applicable
- The opportunity to work for an organization that has a strong sense of purpose, is values driven and helps colleagues to develop professionally and personally through our range of people development programmes.

The role

- Perform complex assessments and provide specialist advice for service delivery, research,

or development work in accordance with the certificate of authorisation and scope of competence.
- Coordinate internal and external resources to provide timely and accurate technical service to clients and LR colleagues on complex defence projects.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with agreed requirements, standard project management methods, process and procedural control, and financial monitoring.
- Support the delivery of the NDP and EDP contracts through dedicated taskings and consistent service delivery against contract requirements.
- Undertake Naval Authority design reviews for technical areas within own competence and develop evidence to support certification decisions.
- Undertake local secondments when required to support client technical design and support activities.

- Develop relationships with, and income from, specialist areas of the naval community such as the NATG, project teams, or local designers, particularly in the concept and design phases.
- Assess and recommend the time and value of work to be undertaken for a client within an agreed cost structure and commercial constraints.
- Represent LR at appropriate technical committee forums and working groups.
- Mentor and coach other technical employees to achieve effective technical knowledge transfer and application.
- Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge, and awareness.

What you bring

- Must hold or be able to achieve UK SC security clearance.

- A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of engineering or physical science (minimum of two years programme) or qualifications from a marine or nautical institution with relevant sea-going experience as a certificated ship’s officer.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (or working towards).
- Adherence to professional codes of conduct and the LR Code of Ethics.
- Previous experience with verification processes, product and rule development, and project management, including delivering technical services and products within defined budgets and timescales.

- Ability to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology.
- Capability to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to analyse and solve engineering problems.
- Ability to provide technical and commercial leadership within the assigned responsibilities.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, including communication in English at all levels.
