The Mary Lyon Centre at MRC Harwell (MLC) is located in an expanding science and innovation campus in Oxfordshire and is an internationally renowned centre at the forefront of genetics research. As the hub of the new National Mouse Genetics Network, the specialist facilities and capabilities of the MLC support a number of research groups across the UK to accelerate our understanding of human diseases, such as cancer, developmental disorders and neurodegeneration.

Job Description

Overall Purpose:

To provide necropsy support within the Pathology team.

Main Duties/Key Responsibilities:

Necropsy

- Performance of dissections, including specialised techniques; e.g., perfusions
- Selection of tissues for embedding prior to tissue processing

Work Scheduling

- Sensible management of scheduled work
- Scheduling of short-notice emergency work

Quality Assurance & Record Keeping

- Authorship and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), risk assessments and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) documents






- Ensuring that all SOPs, risk assessments and COSHH requirements are observed
- Maintaining database, records and logs as per the requirements for ISO 9001 certification
- Ensuring that training is kept up to date

Archiving & Stock Control

- Ensuring that all consumables, reagents and chemicals are logged and stored
- Ensuring that all samples are logged, stored and archived appropriately; e.g., tissue archive

Working Relationships:

The post-holder will report to the Head of Pathology Services and work within a team of Pathology technicians. They will be expected to liaise with internal and external customers as well as service engineers and suppliers.

Additional Information:







- The post-holder may occasionally be required to travel to attend meetings or training.
- Support will be provided towards attaining professional registration with the Science Council.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications/Training Required:

Essential:

- Record of training in necropsy

Desirable:

- Home Office personal licence
- Relevant BSc or HND

Previous Work Experience Required:

Essential:

- Experience of routine rodent necropsy techniques

Desirable:

- Recent experience of necropsy in a high-throughput environment
- Experience of working within a quality management system
- Experience of working in a commercial or service-led environment

Knowledge and Experience:

Essential:

- Competence and knowledge in necropsy principles and practice
- Computer literacy







Desirable:

- In-depth knowledge of mouse anatomy and physiology

Personal skills/Behaviours/Qualities:

Essential:

- Excellent communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Flexible and adaptable in approach to work to ensure that changing priorities and deadlines are met
- A focus on service delivery
- Ability to work on day-to-day functions both independently and as part of a team

Desirable:

- Experience of training others
