Job Description: Locum Consultant in Psychiatry

1. Clinical Responsibilities:

- Patient Assessment and Diagnosis: Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnose mental health disorders, and formulate treatment plans.
- Treatment and Management: Lead the development and implementation of individualized care plans for patients with complex psychiatric conditions. This may include pharmacological treatments, psychotherapies, or other interventions.
- Crisis Intervention: Provide emergency psychiatric care for acute mental health crises, including risk assessments and immediate management strategies.
- Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams: Work closely with mental health professionals, including psychologists, nurses,





social workers, and occupational therapists, to provide integrated care.
- Outpatient and Inpatient Care: Manage both outpatient and inpatient psychiatric services, as well as liaising with community mental health services when necessary.
- Supervision and Leadership: Lead and supervise junior doctors, registrars, and other healthcare professionals, offering mentorship and clinical guidance.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate, detailed patient records and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

2. Non-Clinical Responsibilities:

- Teaching and Training: Provide education and training to medical students, junior doctors, and other healthcare staff.
- Audits and Quality Improvement: Participate in clinical audits, service evaluations, and quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing patient care.
- Research (Optional): Engage in clinical research or promote evidence-based practices within the department.
- Meetings and Conferences: Attend multidisciplinary team meetings,





case conferences, and departmental meetings to contribute to policy and protocol development.

3. Administrative Responsibilities:

- Compliance with Hospital Policies: Ensure adherence to the hospital’s or clinic’s policies, including safeguarding, health and safety, and patient confidentiality.
- Clinical Governance: Actively participate in clinical governance initiatives to improve standards of care.
- On-Call Duties: Provide on-call psychiatric support as required, depending on the rota.

Qualifications:

1. Educational Background:

- Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent): A degree in medicine, followed by completion of the necessary foundation years (F1/F2).
- Specialist Training in Psychiatry:





Completion of postgraduate training in psychiatry (Core Psychiatry Training, followed by Higher Specialty Training in a psychiatric subspecialty such as General Adult Psychiatry, Old Age Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, etc.).
- Membership/Fellowship: Full membership with the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent professional body. Fellowship (FRCPsych) may be expected or preferred depending on experience.

2. Certification and Licensure:

- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in psychiatry, or within six months of achieving CCT at the time of application.
- GMC Registration: Full registration with a license to practice from the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK, or the relevant licensing authority in other regions.
- Right to Work in the Country:





Locum consultants must have legal permission to work in the country they are applying to, such as the UK, which might require a valid work visa if the applicant is from overseas.

3. Experience:

- Consultant-Level Experience: Several years of experience in a consultant or senior registrar position, ideally within the NHS or an equivalent healthcare system.
- Subspecialty Expertise: Experience in a psychiatric subspecialty (e.g., forensic psychiatry, perinatal psychiatry, or child and adolescent psychiatry) may be required or advantageous.
- Leadership and Management: Proven experience in leading clinical teams, supervising junior staff, and managing complex cases.

4. Skills and Attributes:

- Excellent Clinical Skills:





Expertise in diagnosing and managing complex psychiatric conditions.
- Communication: Strong communication skills, particularly in explaining complex diagnoses and treatments to patients, families, and other professionals.
- Team Leadership: Ability to lead and coordinate multidisciplinary teams effectively.
- Problem-Solving: Strong decision-making and crisis management skills, particularly in high-pressure environments.
- Compassion and Empathy: Sensitivity in dealing with vulnerable patients with mental health needs.
- Flexibility and Adaptability: As a locum, you may need to adjust quickly to different work environments, patient populations, and team dynamics.

Desirable Qualifications:

- Additional Qualifications: Postgraduate qualifications, such as a Master’s in Psychiatry,





Clinical Leadership, or Psychopharmacology, may be an advantage.
- Research or Teaching Experience: A track record of academic publications or involvement in research is often highly regarded.
- Specialist Certifications: Additional certifications in areas like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, or addiction psychiatry could enhance your profile.

Additional Requirements:

- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check (UK-specific): A satisfactory DBS check (or equivalent in other countries) is required for working with vulnerable populations.
- Health Clearance: Occupational health clearance to ensure the ability to fulfill the physical and mental demands of the role.

Working Conditions:

- Contract Type: Temporary,





usually for a fixed term (weeks to months).
- Hours: May vary; typical hours range from full-time to part-time, with possible on-call duties or shift work.

Contract length: 12 months

Pay: £110.69-£125.00 per hour

Expected hours: 45 – 50 per week
