Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospital Trust are seeking a Band 6 Diabetes Specialist Nurse to work as part of the diabetes nursing team.

We are looking for a self-motivated, team player to come and join the Diabetes Nursing team to help improve patient care and outcomes across Trust.

Ideally the you will have experience as a diabetes nurse with a knowledge of diabetes treatment, you should also be ready and willing to learn and develop this.

You will be involved in assessing in-patients with diabetes, helping to review and suggest treatment as well as giving advice and education to patients, relatives and ward staff.







You will be involved in out-patient clinics and expected to run phone clinics for recently discharged patients. You will be involved in supporting and supervising junior diabetes nurses.

You will need to be available to work across site and may be required to help cover 7 days a week. Each day brings a new, exciting challenge and there are always learning opportunities to embark on.

Main duties of the job

- To work as a member of the multidisciplinary team providing a specialist service to adults with diabetes.
- To assist in the provision of a high-quality Diabetes service at King George and Queens Hospital.
- To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care whilst acting as a role model, educator and a competent nurse.
- To deliver education to staff, patients and carers.
- To provide support and knowledge to other healthcare professionals : i.e. trained nursing staff and junior medical staff.






- To be involved in the running of protocol-based nurse led clinics for diabetes patients, including assessment and follow up.

Patients across north east London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year.





This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 7,800 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups.

We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.

Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford.







We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es; in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.

We’re pleased to be leading the way in reducing the time our patients wait to get the treatment they need. The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to be accredited as part of a national scheme;

the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for urgent and emergency care at Queen’s and King George hospitals; and data released by NHS England showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care.







We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital.

We’re also part of the North East London Cancer Alliance.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria

- RGN level 1
- Relevant qualification applicable to diabetes
- Education to degree level or equivalent experience.

Knowledge / Experience

Desirable criteria

Experience in audit.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
