Job description
The Department of Mechanical Engineering, Imperial College London, is seeking a Workshop Technician to join its Research Design and Manufacturing (RDM) facility.
Supporting the ground-breaking research undertaken across the Departments Academic disciplines, the RDM Workshop team is a key component in our research having real-world impacts on commercial, medical and environmental endeavours.
With over 50 Academics and more than 280 research staff and students working on a range of topics from medical implants & surgical techniques to new-age engine & fuel technologies, the demand for manufacturing high-quality components has never been higher!
You will work within the RDW Workshop liaising with Senior Workshop and Laboratory Technicians, Academics, Researchers and suppliers to provide a comprehensive machining service.
You will use knowledge of traditional and modern engineering techniques to interpret project designs for fabrication. This will include :
- working as part of the Department’s Research Design and Manufacturing Workshop team to provide machining and traditional engineering support for our groundbreaking research.
- engaging with Academics and Researchers to interpret and provide feasible design solutions for components, sub-assemblies, and whole assemblies.
- producing and interpreting engineering drawings in CAD format.
- producing CNC code from CAM packages
Our ideal candidate has completed a recognised apprenticeship / HNC in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), and have an NVQ level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant accredited workplace.
You will also :
- have experience of traditional engineering machines, principals and techniques including in hand tools.
- be able to use CNC machines and Wire EDM machines,
and understand their applications.
- be able to demonstrate an appreciation of health & safety in a workshop environment.
This position is based within the Department of Mechanical Engineering central team of research manufacturing and design.
The postholder will engage with research across a broad range of engineering disciplines, supporting the design and creation of components from rigs to test sustainable and alternative fuels, to testing materials for surgical use.
