Job overview

We are seeking skilled and compassionate individuals to join the new NHS Children and Young People’s Gender Service (London) in the role of Consultant Psychiatrist in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Post holders will provide consultant psychiatrist leadership and expertise for the NHS Children and Young People’s Gender Service, as part of the multidisciplinary team.

Successful candidates will be responsible for ensuring the highest levels of safety and quality in the service. They will have been involved in service improvement and design and be able to work objectively in a service with high level of external scrutiny, whilst focusing on delivering the best care for children and young people,





aligned to the new service specification.

The post holder will provide clinical leadership, supervision and support to junior staff and be a source of clinical expertise to the multi- disciplinary team.

The post offers opportunities to take a key role in a number of exciting service development and research initiatives.

In line with recommendations from the ongoing Cass Review, we are recruiting to part time sessions, in order for staff to maintain a broad clinical perspective by working across related services within other secondary and tertiary centres.

It is expected that staff members will therefore work across at least one other clinical specialism area, in addition to this role within the gender service.

A new clinical pathway has been developed, based on the recommendations of The Cass Review Interim Report, the NHS England interim service specification, and the expertise of many clinicians from across the Northern and Southern Hubs.

The service will be delivered by a wide multi-disciplinary team including paediatricians, mental health practitioners, youth workers, nurses, speech and language therapists and occupational therapists.







Who patients see will be dependent on the support and care they need.

Children and young people will receive an in-depth assessment of their needs, and a care plan will be developed with them and, if needed, those supporting them.

Children and young people may be offered a range of care interventions such as therapy, family therapy, physical health support, or mental health support for any identified difficulties they may want help with.

The team will also liaise with health professionals in local services nearer to the child or young person.

Following the recommendations of The Cass Review Interim Report, two new nationally networked services led by specialist children’s tertiary care providers are being established.

The Southern Hub, based in London,





is delivered by a partnership of Evelina London Children’s Hospital (part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust), Great Ormond Street Hospital and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

The Northern Hub is delivered by a partnership of Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (part of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust).

This role is based in the Southern Hub.

Academic / Professional qualification / Training

Essential criteria

- MRC Psych or equivalent A
- CCT (or within 6 months of accreditation)
- Full GMC Registration & inclusion on Specialist GMC Register
- Sec 12 (2) and Approved Clinician status (or undertaking to obtain this on taking up the post)

Desirable criteria

Higher degree or additional qualifications (, MSc, PhD on a related topic / neuroscience, Psychotherapy diploma, Teaching Proficiency)

Training and Experience / Knowledge

Essential criteria







- Completion of Higher Psychiatric Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or being within 6 months of achieving CCT accreditation Or Equivalent training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CESR issued by PMETB)
- Experience of working with young people in mental health community settings
- Experience of effective multidisciplinary team working.
- Experience of effective multi-agency partnership.
- Ability to undertake full range of consultant responsibilities.

Desirable criteria

- Approved training and experience in relevant therapeutic practice ( psychoeducation, parenting groups, CBT or Family Therapy) AND / OR previous consultant experience.
- Evidence of leadership experience
- Evidence of service development experience, such as setting up a new service and service evaluation
- Application of evidence based practice and interest in clinical and policy developments for this care group






- Development of multidisciplinary teamwork, close collaboration with a wide variety of services including paediatrics and social care

Skills / Abilities

Essential criteria

- Therapeutic skills relevant to the management of children and young people with complex presentation
- Evidence based practice
- Knowledge and understanding of relevant national and professional guidelines
- Experience of working in multidisciplinary settings
- Knowledge and understanding of the centrality of Safeguarding and the Rights of The Child in clinical practice

Desirable criteria

- Approved training and experience in neurodevelopmental assessments
- Knowledge and understanding of electronic mental health records and Information and Communications Technology
- Knowledge and experience in outcome measures in children and young people with neuropsychiatric disorders

Management and Leadership

Essential criteria

- Knowledge, understanding and compliance with Clinical Governance guidance structures and principles (, service quality improvement, gap analysis) Participation in quality improvement work
- Participation in development of service protocols and service development projects
- Demonstrable ability to effectively lead a multidisciplinary team
- Must have excellent skills in communication in English with patients, relatives / carers, colleagues and staff or other organisations

- Approved training and experience in leadership and management

Teaching

Essential criteria

- Approved training and experience in teaching (, undergraduates, post-graduate students)
- Experience of and interest in developing post-graduate teaching
- Approved training and experience as clinical and educational supervisor to junior doctors
- Knowledge, understanding and experience of the development / training programmes for staff of all disciplines (, nurse, GPs).
- A higher teaching degree (, lecturer, senior lecturer, reader)
- Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching.
- Higher training or qualification in postgraduate clinical education

Academic Achievements

Essential criteria

Approved training and experience in research and quality improvement project understanding and experience

- Demonstrable academic achievements to support continued allocation of Research time in job plan
- A proven track record, in child and adolescent psychiatry research (, lead research team, research supervisor, oral communications)
