The Role:
We are looking for an experienced and dynamic Head of Theatre Services to lead and manage our state-of-the-art operating theatre department, endoscopy & CSSD. This is a key position within the hospital,
combining strategic leadership with hands-on operational management.
The Head of Theatre Services will play a critical role in ensuring our theatre services operate efficiently, safely, and effectively. You will be responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team, managing resources, maintaining clinical governance compliance, and driving continuous improvement in the quality of patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the theatre department: Provide clear leadership and direction to theatre staff, including scrub nurses, ODPs, and anaesthetists.
- Operational management: Oversee the daily running of the theatres, endoscopy & CSSD, ensuring efficient scheduling and resource allocation.
- Staffing and skill mix: Ensure optimal staffing levels and skill mix to meet patient care demands.
- Financial management: Develop and oversee the department’s budget, ensuring cost-effective use of resources.
- Patient safety and clinical governance: Ensure compliance with hospital policies,
CQC regulations, and clinical governance standards, including safety protocols such as the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
- Quality improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the department, ensuring the highest standards of patient care.
- Communication and collaboration: Maintain effective communication and collaboration with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other clinical teams.
- Equipment and resource management: Oversee the procurement and maintenance of theatre equipment, ensuring resources are available for all procedures.
- Risk and incident management: Investigate and manage clinical incidents, implementing corrective actions to minimise future risks.
- Service development:
Lead the introduction of new techniques and technologies to keep the department at the forefront of clinical innovation.
About You:
The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader with a strong background in theatre management. You will have the ability to inspire and lead a multidisciplinary team, manage complex operations, and drive improvements in patient care and service delivery.
Essential Requirements:
- Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with relevant clinical qualifications.
- Management qualification (e.g., ILM, NVQ, or postgraduate degree in healthcare management).
- Significant experience managing theatre services in a hospital setting.
- Strong leadership skills with experience managing multidisciplinary teams.
- Proven financial management skills,
including budgeting and resource management.
- In-depth knowledge of clinical governance frameworks and quality improvement processes.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Previous experience in a private hospital setting.
