In-House Counsel – Insurance Sector – 8+ PQE

Our client is a long-established insurance broker in the City with a rich heritage and strong track record. It is the twelfth largest insurance broker in the UK and the sixth largest broker placing business into Lloyd’s of London. Placing £2.3bn of premium into the markets annually, our client insures companies in over 100 countries across the world. In 2022 it was acquired by an Australian listed company that operates globally given it more strength and reach than ever before.

We are hiring a newly created role for a senior lawyer.The role reports to the Legal Director and is a member of the Legal Leadership Team (alongside the Legal Director,





Head of Compliance and Data Protection Officer), and will be responsible for autonomously handling the legal workload.

This is the first additional hire in the Legal team, and you will have the opportunity to shape the role and the team. The candidate will work closely with the Legal Director to agree roles and responsibilities that ensure the legal workload is handled expertly and efficiently.

To fill this vacancy, we are seeking a lawyer at least 8 years’ PQE and with insurance sector experience. Ideally you will have trained in a top tier national or international firm and have in-house experience in insurance industry.

You should have good working knowledge of the insurance regulation, and experience of negotiating and drafting insurance contracts such as broker agreements and distribution agreements. A good understanding of E&O; policies and claims would also be advantageous. In addition to the insurance sector knowledge the role will require a broad range of expertise across commercial, M&A;, employment and FCA regulation.







The successful candidate must be able to autonomously deliver legal support to the business and have strong communication skills to build the necessary stakeholder relationships. You will need to drive change and be able to work in an environment that is sometimes challenging and ambiguous.

This role would suit a senior lawyer looking to develop a broader skillset ahead of progressing to a general counsel role, particularly as it presents an opportunity to gain experience of shaping a legal function with the support of the Legal Director.
