Construction Project Manager
Field based with UK & International travel

Due to our continued growth and exciting new initiatives across our UK retail estates, we are currently recruiting a Construction Project Manager to join our talented Construction team. Whilst field based, this role requires attendance in our London office as required,
and will include frequent travel across the UK and Internationally, therefore flexibility is essential.
This is an exciting time to join the construction team! Reporting into the Head of Construction you will manage a number of concurrent projects including our new concept roll-outs and trials from inception to completion, refurbishments, and smaller roll outs across our various formats. You will manage timescales, budget and all progress communication both internally and externally. You will also manage projects through external third party project management resource. A key part of this role is managing stakeholders and influencing business decisions.
Our Construction team are currently working on a large number of exciting concept developments and roll-outs across all of our retail formats, from airports, hospitals, railway stations, shopping centres and high streets both in the UK and abroad. As well as the main WHSmith format our team also manage work on our coffee shops and M&S; simply food concessions. The work is varied,
fast paced and rewarding.
What you will be doing:
- Delivering UK & International construction projects to time, within budget and to the highest quality
- Proactively managing projects from initiation, through the design & approvals process, cost sign off, contractor selection, work on site, handover, snagging and final accounts / project closure
- Rigorous cost control at all project stages, risk identification and mitigation
- Dealing with and resolving any issues with project delivery or cost during the life of the project, liaising with contractors, landlords and internal stakeholders
- Maintaining best practice for all aspects of construction projects and ensures work on site is safe and in line with relevant legislation
- Ensuring clear project scope briefs and drawings are produced for design teams and contractors to follow
- Providing up to date project information on progress
We are looking for:
- Excellent communication and influencing skills with the ability to interact at all levels of the organisation as well as with contractors, store teams and other partners such as landlords etc
- Previous experience in a Project Management role, ideally with a focus on Retail and/or construction, for this role a good understanding of project management and retail is as important as any specific construction experience and qualifications as we are looking for a mixture of skills within the team
- Experience of managing 3rd party contractors and managing suppliers/landlords relationships
- Self-managing with ability to plan and prioritise multiple activities and juggle prioritise effectively
- Valid UK Driving licence
