Job overview
To work without direct supervision in performing and recording various cardiology investigations provided by the department for a safe, effective, and efficient Cardiology service.
To assist Clinical Physiologists and support the delivery of quality healthcare to patients within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
To provide an inpatient and outpatient service for all wards / units, peripheral hospitals and community sites within the Trust.
To take responsibility for the initial management of unwell patients or untoward ECG findings.
To communicate with on-site and DCU staff such as Clinical Physiologists,
Associate / Assistant Practitioners or other healthcare professionals when working at peripheral hospitals and community sites.
To work as a member of the team with direction and supervision where necessary from Clinical Physiologists and Associate Practitioners.
To train and develop staff and students in performing 12 lead ECG’s, Holter monitoring and Ambulatory Blood Pressure monitoring.
To act as a key trainer in the use of IMPAX, Heart Station and Sentinel.
Main duties of the job
- Perform routine and urgent ECG’s on adult and paediatric patients providing a quality inpatient and outpatient ECG service.
- Prepare ECG and blood pressure equipment for periods of ambulatory monitoring. Attach equipment and give clear and concise instructions to patients to optimise recordings.
Assist with reporting in conjunction with the Clinical Physiologist / Associate Practitioner.
- Identify and care for unwell patients and / or ECG abnormalities requiring attention and escalate appropriately.
- Take an active role in the resuscitation of patients (BLS)
suffering from ischaemic episodes / cardiac arrest resulting from clinical examinations designed to provoke cardiac ischemia.
- Give support and advice to patients / carers / medical team following completion of investigative cardiology procedures.
- Maintain awareness of developments within Cardiology ensuring personal knowledge and skills are consistently developed in order to maintain competency.
- Assess and maintain equipment and devices for safe use during cardiology investigations.
- Undertake clerical duties.
- To organise and prepare patients information ready for investigation, and identify as correct on equipment as necessary.
- Participate in clinical audit and clinical governance programmes both departmental and Trust wide.
- To be a key trainer for IMPAX Scheduler,
Heart Station and Sentinel.
- Organise and undertake annual assessments for staff performing ECG, Holter monitoring and Ambulatory Blood Pressure monitoring.

- GCSE Grade 4 / C in Maths and English or equivalent qualification or equivalent experience.
- Must have passed the SCST Certificate in Electrocardiography
Experience

Significant experience working in the Diagnostic Cardiology Unit at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals as a Healthcare Science Support Worker
Further Training
Essential criteria
Experience of using computer systems including Sentinel, IMPAX and HeartStation.
