Job description

Required to fill one full time replacement post within the Orthodontic Department at the Leeds Dental Institute.

The Orthodontic team within the Leeds Dental Institute comprises of five Orthodontic Consultants, two visiting Consultants and one academic, currently seven speciality registrars, two orthodontic therapists and an excellent dental nursing team.

The provision of multi-disciplinary care is enabled due to close working relationships with colleagues in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology.

The Orthodontic clinic within the Leeds Dental Institute comprises of a large open clinic with additional consulting rooms.







There is an on-site dental laboratory and the department is 3-D enabled with intra-oral scanners. Imaging is provided by the Dental & Maxillofacial Radiology Department which boasts two Ceph machines, two OPT machines and two Cone Beam CT machines.

The Leeds Dental Institute also has an on-site 3D planning laboratory.

Main duties of the job

This post is a replacement 1.0 WTE substantive Consultant Orthodontic post within the Leeds Dental Institute. The successful applicant will join the well-established Orthodontic team and contribute to the clinical treatment of sleep apnoea cases and of complex orthodontic and multi-disciplinary cases.

With respect to the latter, the postholders will join the orthognathic team and provide orthodontic planning and treatment for our cohort of orthognathic patients.







They will also contribute to the maintenance and further development of excellence in teaching quality including clinical teaching in the Orthodontic Department at Leeds Dental Institute for undergraduate and postgraduate students and inspire our students to develop to their full potential.

The successful applicant should possess the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (or equivalent) or be within 6 months of possession of the ISFE at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK.

In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

Applicants should have established skills in orthodontics with evidence of mature clinical judgement. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

In relation to this post, the Leeds Dental Institute, part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK), is the largest provider of dental undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and clinical services in West, North and East Yorkshire.

The Orthodontic Department is looking for a keen and enthusiastic colleague to join the award winning team (in the past 15 years Leeds has helped train 5 MOrth Gold Medal winners and 4 winners of the MOrth Cases Prize) and continue provision of teaching and clinical service to a high standard.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

To contribute to the clinical treatment of complex, multi-disciplinary cases.





To contribute to the maintenance and further development of excellence in teaching quality including clinical teaching in the Orthodontic Department at Leeds Dental Institute for postgraduate students.

To inspire our students to develop to their full potential.

2.1 To deliver care for Orthodontic patients at Leeds Teaching Hospitals

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of patients

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings, and the treatment of sleep apnoea patients

2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Leeds Dental Institute and across the trust.

2.3 To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Leeds Dental Institute.





The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the Orthodontic Department.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

The successful applicant should possess the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination (or equivalent) or be within 6 months of possession of the ISFE at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK.

In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

- Eligible for full registration with the GDC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice - YOUR GDC NUMBER MUST BE STATED ON YOUR APPLICATION FORM.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Is up to date and fit to practise safely.

Desirable

- Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery,





or equivalent.
- Prizes / awards / distinctions.
- Possession of a higher degree in Orthodontics (eg. MSc, MClinDent, MPhil etc.)

Experience

Essential

- Must be able to demonstrate previous experience and a commitment to patient care in addition to a high level of clinical experience and competence in the treatment of complex, multi-disciplinary orthodontic patients commensurate with stage of career or training if within 6 months of possessing the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Orthodontics.
- Specifically, they must demonstrate higher training in orthodontics possessing, or being within 6 months of possessing the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Orthodontics.
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit

Essential

- Should have completed a recognised training programme in Orthodontics.
- Evidence of the ability to carry out dental research relevant to Orthodontics.
- Experience in training undergraduate and postgraduate dental students.
- Experience of participation in regular clinical audit and clinical governance.

Desirable

- An interest in further involvement in clinical research where opportunities arise.
- Publications in refereed journals.
- Training in teaching.
- Experience of teaching different professional groups.
- Training in appraisal and assessment techniques.
- Evidence of changed practice through clinical audit.
- Experience in developing clinical guidelines and outcome measures.

Management, Interpersonal & Other

Essential

- Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
