Job overview

The NMUH is looking for a highly motivated experienced Band 5 or Band 6 who enjoys a challenge to join our acute in-patient physiotherapy service.

We can offer the successful candidate a variety of rotations and the opportunity to develop both clinical and managerial skills.

Rotations include Critical Care and HDU; Acute Stroke Unit; Medical wards; Elderly Wards, Admission Avoidance, Orthopaedic and Surgical Wards;

Oncology ward and Paediatrics.

Main duties of the job

- To perform highly specialist physiotherapy assessments and develop treatment & management programmes for patients with acute and chronic conditions maintaining records as an autonomous practitioner.






- To participate in the education and training of staff grade Physiotherapists, Technicians, Assistants, Students and other Healthcare Profession
- To deputise for the Team Leader Physiotherapist in their absence.
- To participate in the 7-day service rota
- To participate in the emergency on call respiratory rota
- To complete rotations in Acute stroke, Admission avoidance, Critical Care / Respiratory, Medical, Oncology, Elderly Care, Orthopaedics & Paediatrics
- To supervise band 5's, therapy assistants and students
- To participate in the audit and research process quality improvement
- To work in an integrated manner with the Occupational Therapists to improve patient care

This includes health visitors and school nurses who are delivering the national Healthy Child Programme, which provides a structured framework for the delivery of key interventions to support the health and wellbeing of children and families from 0 to 5 and school aged children from 5-19.

The 0-19 service aims to improve pathways and partnerships with services in the hospital and deliver excellent care for the children and families.

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care.

To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support more junior staff to do likewise.

To interpret and analyse complex clinical and non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnoses and prognoses in a wide range of complex conditions, to recommend the best course of intervention, and to develop comprehensive discharge plans.

Please note if your employment starts before the 24 / 25 pay scales are implemented you will be paid under the 23 / 24 pay scales and any backpay will be adjusted accordingly.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria

- Degree or Diploma in Physiotherapy
- Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council
- Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists

Desirable criteria

Member of a relevant Clinical Interest Group

Essential criteria

- Able to communicate complex and sensitive information in written and verbal forms to patients and staff
- Able to apply problem-solving skills to complex situations,





which may include clinical or organisational issues
- To have well developed clinical reasoning skills
- Able to work as a team member and to develop team spirit
- Well developed organisational and planning skills
- Able to assimilate and analyse complex clinical information
- Able to identify and recognise when to seek advice and support concerning clinical, managerial, professional and organisational issues
- Ability and competency in using a range of therapeutic techniques including manual therapy, manual handling techniques, exercise therapy, respiratory equipment and personal hygiene activities
- Competent to perform within the on call ITU rota
- Able to identify own training needs and support others to do likewise
- Good counselling and advocacy skills to support staff, patients and carers






- Able to employ motivational and influencing skills with staff, patients, carers and other professionals

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

- Completed the core rotations (ITU, acute medicine, older peoples acute care, neurology or acute stroke / surgery / orthopaedics) (undergraduate placements will not fulfil this criterion)
- Fully competent to practice in intensive care
- Experience across a range of NHS sectors e.g. Primary, Secondary and Community Services
- Experience of writing and delivering in-service training programmes
- Experience of supervising non-qualified staff, including participation in personal development reviews
- Experience of discharge planning
- Experience of completing basic functional assessments

- Basic computer literacy
- Knowledge of current NHS initiatives
- Understanding of Clinical Governance and its application to physiotherapy services
- Knowledge of physiotherapy professional issues
- Knowledge of a variety of physiotherapy interventions which can be used to the benefit of various patient groups and current best practice
- Knowledge of pathologies and the current medical management of commonly occurring conditions for hospital based and community patientss
- Knowledge of other medical conditions which you may encounter including, but not exclusively, respiratory, orthopaedic, neurological and mental health conditions,
- Knowledge of outcome measure tools
- Knowledge of the audit cycle and its uses
