Vacancy Information

This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities / employers with different terms and conditions.

Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.

Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements.

A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

Salary Grade Range - Surrey Police £32,163 - £38,008 / Sussex Police £34,329 - £37,692

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

Working 36 hours,





occasional weekend / evening working, emergency on-call.

The Role :

To effectively manage the dog school kennels and breeding programme, maintaining high levels of animal welfare and enrichment which will resultantly support the Operational Dog Unit, in addition to the day-to-day management of a team of kennel staff and large number of volunteers.

Kennel management of all operational dogs, Gatwick dogs, private security dogs and all foreign course dogs, maintaining high levels of animal hygiene and welfare and administering the logistical aspects of the kennels

Day-to-day line management of kennel staff and a large number of volunteers, providing and arranging training & support to all attendants, volunteers and dog minders







Organising and running a Kennel Support Volunteer scheme

Being the emergency call out for serious incidents (including medical incidents) with the dogs outside of working hours (emergency on-call).

Being the Surrey & Sussex Police point of contact for dog breeding queries.

Managing and running the breeding programme, acting as the breeding manager for Surrey and Sussex Police dogs, and achieving pre-agreed training standards for each puppy / dog on assessment prior to allocation

To take responsibility for the re-homing or the sale of all failed / retired / rejected dogs and puppies.

To deliver training inputs on the puppies that are owned by Surrey and Sussex Police.

Liaising with other forces to fix a price for the sale and purchase of dogs







To manage over 50 dogs that are out with puppy minders.

To supply and monitor the initial training of potential working Dogs for Surrey and Sussex Police.

Skills & Experience

Must have :

Dog training qualification

Canine First Aid qualification and / or experience Kennel Club registration and / or experience of the workings of the Kennel Club Previous experience of kennel management Significant dog training experience including canine temperament assessing.

Must have carried out animal temperament assessments.

Experience of managing and leading a team Significant understanding / experience of animal husbandry / behavioural drives in working dogs.

A good understanding of dog breeding protocols and blood lines.

Understand (and / or experience)





of the DEFRA quarantine and travel processes.

Good communication skills both written and verbal. Specialist breeding knowledge, to understand dog breeding / whelping of puppies.

Full driving licence Be able to work occasional weekends and evenings, and to be on-call in the event of an out-of-hours emergency Prepared to travel abroad when required in connection with the mating of Brood Bitches, acquisition of dogs and, training and personal development.

Duties :

The kennel manager has five members of staff who are responsible for all the hygiene and welfare of both them and the animals in our care.

It is essential that the health of our fleet of police dogs is maintained to a high and regulated standard.







The manager deals directly with over fifty puppy minders and six brood bitch minders.

The Surrey and Sussex dog school also runs courses for overseas and UK students. The manager has to supervise their animals and organises the travel papers and Quarantine regulations for their forward travel from the UK.

The kennel manager must have strong communication skills and be able to deal with outside forces and agencies especially within the breeding arena.

Arrangements with other forces helps us to save money on the cost of sire fees and keeps breeding costs to a minimum.

The breeding manager is responsible for fifty dogs that are currently out with members of the public.





They need to be kept updated of all training days that are to be attended so that the dogs can be correctly developed and environmentally enriched.

The kennel manager must communicate with outside agencies such as the RSPCA, Dogs Trust and the Kennel club to ensure that all quality assurance checks are carried out to the modern standard.

The kennel manager must liaise with the Kennel club before a mating is allowed to take place to ensure the compatibility of both parents.

To assess the suitability of both dogs and minders and re-home dogs where necessary. This is to include visiting other sites, outside of the Dog School, to carry out these assessments.
