Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust are seeking to appoint a Speciality Doctorin Geriatric Medicine to support Geriatric Medicine. The role is 09:00 - 17:00 with weekend ward cover as part of 1 in 4 rota with perspective cover for annual and other leave.

Successful candidates will be working with other middle grade staff to provide first line of support for Specialty Trainees and Foundation Doctors and take the lead in the care of the seriously ill patients see and treat all categories of patients in Frail/Elderly Care/Geriatric and General Internal Medicine.

Main duties of the job

The main duties are of the role will include the following: * Reception/diagnosis/treatment of new patients

- Assist the Consultant on the ward.
- Independent ward rounds once a week
- Provide support to junior doctors.
- Assist in teaching junior members of staff in the department
- Act as team leader in the reception/diagnosis/treatment of seriously ill patients in the absence of the Consultant
- Participation in Saturday wards cover.
- Maintain a satisfactory standard of education as determined at the yearly performance review/ Mandatory training a Trust appraisals
- Encouraged to partake in the Trust Speciality Doctor teaching and training programme
- Provide prospective cover for colleagues' absence
- Participation in departmental teaching

The post holder will be supported by an appropriately skilled medical secretariat.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

- Basic Medical Qualification (i.e. MBBS or equivalent)
- At least 4 years post graduate training
- ATLS/ALS/APLA are all essential
- Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
- Appropriate Immigration Status (where appropriate)

Desirable

- MRCP

Experience
Essential

- Relevant up-to-date experience and qualifications to undertake duties at middle grade level is essential.
- Operative skills commensurate with middle-grade level






- Awareness of all aspects of care for patients attending the Elderly Care department
- Experience in Frail/Elderly Care/Geriatric and General Internal Medicine Working knowledge of the NHS or an equivalent organisation.
- Awareness of the differing needs of a diverse population in relation to ethnicity
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-professional team basis with all levels of staff.
- Ability to act as an effective role model for junior staff.
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems within the specialty
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
- Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgments when faced with conflicting pressures.






- Experience of organising and delivering teaching

- An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
- Enthusiasm and ability to work under pressure
- Caring attitude to patients.
- Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national level.
- Able to communicate in written and spoken English.
