Based : Various Primary and Secondary Schools / Academies across Oldham

Role Overview :

Oldham Council’s Governor Support Service is currently looking to recruit several experienced clerks / minute takers to be Clerk to the School Governing Boards in the Oldham area.

This is a key role providing accurate minutes of meetings and procedural advice to the Chair and the governing board.

The role involves :

- Supporting the Chair of governors
- Taking meeting notes and writing accurate minutes of the meetings
- Providing advice to the governing board on governance, constitutional and procedural matters.






- Liaising with the Chair and Headteacher
- Keeping governor information up to date on GovernorHub database
- Ensure the governing board is properly constituted.
- Managing information effectively in accordance with legal requirements.
- Being familiar with the Department for Education (DfE) Governance Handbook

Key Responsibilities :

- Clerks will be allocated several school governing board meetings per term across the year, which they attend and support
- Clerks are also expected to work from home most of their time with access to a modern IT system and the internet.
- Each school governing board holds between one or two full governing board meetings per term with a small number of additional committee meetings.

For the majority of schools, they are usually held after the school day, late afternoon or in the evenings.





Willingness to attend evening meetings is essential, however, a degree of flexibly is required as there could be a need for additional meetings from time to time per half term.

Clerks are required to attend termly clerks briefing sessions held by the Local Authority and to also attend relevant training.

Key Requirements :

The job role requires someone who has :

- is a good communicator with excellent customer care skills, who works well on their own using their own initiative and as part of a team.
- excellent literacy, numeracy, written and IT skills
- can produce clear and precise minutes and also has good attention to detail.

Previous experience as a Clerk to a governing board or as a school governor would be an advantage but not essential.
