We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated communications apprentice to join our busy Immunology team. You will support this award-winning team to effectively and creatively engage our internal and external audiences.
The Immunology department at Bart’s Health NHS Trust is looking for a confident and motivated Associate Practitioner to support the laboratory service.
The role is a key post, developing and delivering our local and trust strategy. Bart’s Health NHS Trust is situated in East London and is formed by The Royal London Hospital, Bart’s Hospital, the London Chest Hospital, Newham University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital.
The Immunology department provides a comprehensive service for in-patients as well as operating a regional referral service.
We are a progressive and busy department looking for an enthusiastic person to assist in supporting this excellent team.
You will have experience of working in a pathology laboratory, be organised and work well under pressure.
Main duties of the job
The main duty of the Associate Practitioner will be to undertake, on a daily basis manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations using a variety of analytical techniques under supervision for the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients.
To contribute to providing a professional laboratory service, working effectively as a team member as part of the overall department.
To liaise with the senior laboratory staff and laboratory medical staff to ensure safe, rapid, timely, processing of samples and accurate reporting of results.
To take the lead in the preparation and processing of clinical specimens under the direct supervision of band 6 and band 7 staff.
To work alongside Band 3 Medical Laboratory Assistant staff working in the laboratory on a daily basis.
The main base for this position will be in the Royal London Whitechapel Immunology laboratory, however working across the Pathology Partnership laboratory sites may be required in line with the needs and requirements of the Immunology service.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.
The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
- Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry;
- Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services;
Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.
The 2020 / 21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa.
822 WTE.

Essential criteria
- Level 4 Science Qualification (BSc,
HNC / HND or foundation degree, BTEC in a science area)
- Evidence of commenced progress with the IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I and Part II
Experience / Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Extensive work experience of working in a diagnostic Pathology laboratory as a Medical Laboratory Assistant
- Good level of knowledge of diagnostic and analytical laboratory techniques including automated technology.
- Good Health & Safety knowledge and understanding of risk assessment.
- Familiarity with Immunology and blood sciences terms.
- Knowledge of Equal Opportunities & Data Protection / Confidentiality.
