An opportunity has arisen for a full-time Upper GI Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist to join the Gastroenterology CNS team at Barts Health NHS Trust at Whipps Cross Hospital site

The post holder will provide expert care and advice to deliver services reflecting the needs of patients with Upper GI and Hepatobiliary cancer ensuring the delivery of high quality, clinically effective care throughout the patient pathway.

The post-holder will continue to develop and provide Nurse-Led clinics for patients presenting with new onset jaundice, Upper GI and hepatobiliary cancer.

We can offer a supportive environment within an experienced, well established Gastroenterology Specialist Nursing team.

Main duties of the job

To develop, implement and evaluate a seamless nurse specialist service, ensuring that patients with upper GI and hepatobiliary malignancy attending hospital receive the highest standard of clinical care, and have access to a fully comprehensive support service.

The clinical nurse specialist for Upper GI cancers will influence patient care through clinical practice, management, leadership, education, research, audit and professional activities considering corporate and directorate objectives and the clinical governance framework.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria

- Demonstrate competence and professional development at band 6 or band 7 in Gastroenterology and / or cancer care
- Experience in prioritising and managing own caseload independently.
- Good working knowledge of treatment of GI and hepatobiliary cancers from diagnosis through to end-of-life treatment

Desirable criteria

- Evidence of specialist knowledge in Upper GI and Hepatobiliary cancer
- Accredited oncology course Level 2 psychology training
- Advanced communication course
- Previous CNS experience in UGI / HPB or an unrelated / related field






- Show willingness to lead on clinical trials
- Experience in management and leadership to lead a team where necessary on service development and improvements

Skills

Essential criteria

- Ability to work to agreed timescale
- Have excellent communication skills, verbal written and IT
- Demonstrates the ability to work effectively as a team member
- Experience in prioritizing instructions and manage own clinical caseload independently
- Experience in management and leadership to lead a team where necessary on service development and improvements

Desirable criteria

- Experience in managing nurse-led clinics
- Experience / working towards experience in breaking bad news

Knowledge

Essential criteria







- Evidence of specialist knowledge in Upper GI and Hepatobiliary cancer
- Proven clinical skills in Oncology
- Knowledge of GI / HPB cancer pathways
- Demonstrates a belief in patient centred philosophy of care.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify when the needs of the client are not met and develop strategies to improve the service
- Demonstrates experience of quality assurance activity
- Knowledge and experience of the education process
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
