Guy’s and St Thomas’ is among the UK’s busiest and most successful NHS foundation trusts.

We provide a full range of hospital and community services for people in south London and as well as specialist care for patients from further afield including cancer, renal, orthopaedic, respiratory and cardiovascular services.

Guy’s is home to the largest dental school in Europe and a £160 million Cancer Centre opened in 2016. As part of our commitment to provide care closer to home, in 2017 we also opened a cancer centre and a kidney treatment centre at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup. St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.

Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

In February 2021 the Royal Brompton and Harefield joined Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, bringing together world-leading expertise in the care and research of heart and lung disease. Our merger provides a once in a generation opportunity to build a lasting, world-renowned heart and lung centre, providing the highest quality care for patients and conducting world-leading research.

We have a reputation for clinical excellence and high quality teaching and research. We are part of King’s Health Partners, one of eight accredited UK academic health sciences centres. In partnership with King’s College London we have dedicated clinical research facilities including an MHRA accredited Phase I clinical trials unit.

Patients are at the heart of everything we do and we pride ourselves on ensuring the best possible patient experience as well as safe, high quality care. We are proud to have one of the lowest mortality rates in the NHS. Following a comprehensive Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection in 2019 we maintained our overall rating of ‘good’. Our adult community services achieved a rating of ‘outstanding’.

The commitment of our 23,500 staff is key to our success. We are one of the largest local employers and we aim to develop and support all our staff so they are able to deliver high quality, safe and efficient care. The 2019 NHS staff survey results show that we have one of the most engaged and motivated workforces in the NHS. We know this has a positive impact on the care provided to our patients.

We have one of the most ambitious capital investment programmes anywhere in the NHS.

Job overview

We have an exciting vacancy within Paediatric Allergy! Due to expansion of our allergy research portfolio we are currently looking to recruit a Band 5 Children’s Clinical Research Nurse with a specialist interest in allergy to join our dynamic and friendly team to support on the delivery of high quality, holistic care to children and young people participating in research studies.

Main duties of the job

As a Children’s Research Nurse you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of a portfolio of research studies spanning a number of specialities in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team. Working across commercial and portfolio adopted studies, you will work with the wider multidisciplinary team including the Principal Investigators and study sponsors to deliver a seamless research pathway for patients. You will be responsible for the holistic nursing care of children and young people and their families on existing clinical trials and contribute to the assessment and management of care pathways for patients participating in clinical studies.

This will involve screening, recruiting, educating and monitoring children and young people in studies as well the collation and documentation of study data. You will be trained to take informed consent for selected studies which do not involve a medicinal product. Previous research or allergy experience is not essential as a comprehensive training and development programme is available.

Working for our organisation

Paediatric research at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital is growing and developing. The paediatric clinical research team is expanding in size, scope and this is an exciting time to join our team and make your mark on paediatric research and help shape its future.

The team supports studies across a diverse range of specialties; from phase one to phase four clinical trials, medical device evaluations, dietetic interventions and cohort studies. The team also offers its skills and expertise on a regular basis to the set up and conduct of over 90 additional studies embedded within the wards and clinical services of Evelina London. These include The Centre for the Developing Brain, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), cardiology and theatres. These roles present the chance to work closely with the clinical teams while expanding your skills.

To support the expanding team and growing portfolio of studies,

we have moved into newly refurbished designated paediatric facilities embedded within the multidisciplinary adult Clinical Research Facility (CRF) in St. Thomas’ Hospital, the paediatric allergy CRF (Seal CRF) located within Evelina London and new modern office space.

Evelina London is the first children’s hospital to be rated as outstanding by the CQC. The paediatric clinical research team works hard to continue this level of excellence and all team members will have the opportunity to contribute to this work.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The primary duty of the post holders will be to provide specialist research and clinical care to participants enrolled in a portfolio of allergy research studies, alongside the wider multi-disciplinary team (MDT).

The clinical work will predominantly include participant visits on Seal Clinical Research Facility, but home visits will also occasionally be required.

If required, clinical research activities will extend to the support and conduct of other studies, including those on the NIHR-CRN portfolio. A proportion of the supported studies will be commercially sponsored. This will include a varied portfolio of research conducted both within the Clinical Research Facilities (CRFs) and on the wards, including: early phase translational clinical research, studies involving paediatric medicines and non-medicines research. This may involve travelling off site (e.g. for home visits), dependent upon the nature of the study. Study visits may need to be performed out of hours depending on the clinical need of the patients and nature of the study.

As a Children’s Research Nurse you will play a key role in assisting with the co-ordination of the research portfolio outlined above, in collaboration with other members of the MDT. As part of this, you will be responsible for the holistic nursing care of children and young people on existing clinical trials, monitoring them and ensure patient safety. You will contribute to the assessment and management of care pathways for patients and carers participating in clinical studies. This will involve recruitment, education and monitoring children in studies, undertaking accurate data collection and data entry into case report forms. Following training the post holders will perform paediatric allergy research procedures, including participant assessment, clinical examination, skin prick testing, oral food challenges and research record-keeping. Post holders will be trained to take informed consent for selected, non-CTIMP studies.

Training and opportunities to work with specific teams and Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) will be provided to meet the special needs of the patients and an opportunity to develop into specialised fields.
