Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a consultant clinical / counselling psychologist to join the BHRUT Pain Management team, and as a senior member of NELFT Clinical Health Psychological Services.

The post holder will work closely alongside the Professional Lead for CHPS, and the consultants and multidisciplinary team at BHRUT, to develop an evidence-based, highly effective psychological assessment and treatment service for patients / carers referred to the Pain Management Programme.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist psychological assessments, psychological interventions and psycho-education to patients and carers referred to the pain management programme.

This will include :





Clinical excellence and experience in delivering comprehensive pain management programmes, and working with a range of pain aetiologies, including acute and persistent pain;

the promotion of appropriate provision of evidence-based psychological treatments within PMPs (mainly group but also individual programmes) and to maintain and improve the quality of group-based self-management training and support offered to participants.

It will include specialist spinal cord stimulation assessments.

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training,





systems training and the allocation of equipment.

As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focusing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes.

The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

High Cost Area Supplement - London







This post attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,551 and a maximum payment of £5,735 per annum pro rata).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide specialist, consultant level psychological assessments of patients, carers and families referred to the pain management will include specialist spinal cord stimulation psychology assessments.

This will be carried out within a multidisciplinary framework.

To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and / or management of the cognitive, emotional, behavioural, physical and psychological health of people with psychological distress in the Pain Management Programme / Pain service,





utilising a bio-psycho-social model, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the patient’s persistent pain and broader problems.

To implement a range of psychological interventions both therapeutic and psycho-educational, for individuals, families and groups, using evidence-based interventions and best practice particular;

To provide psychological input to the Service’s multi-disciplinary Pain Management Programme. These are out-patient interventions based on cognitive-behavioural / ACT principles / best practice guidelines as set out by the Royal Pain Society, for a group of patients with chronic pain.

The programmes will vary from 8 week programmes,





to 3 week intensive programmes (4 days per week).To show clinical expertise in the area of individual and group mindfulness-based therapeutic techniques, as well as a strong clinical background in CBT and ACT o show expertise, familiarity and comfort in running group based psychology interventions, as a large dimension of the pain management programme will rely on evidence based group programmes.

To show clinical expertise and sensitivity in the psychological management of acute distress, anxiety and despair related to persistent pain.

This would include experience in working with suicide risk, hopelessness, post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma related symptoms, as well as a highly skilled ability to assess and manage deterioration in mental state.

HCPC registration clinical / counselling psychologist

Desirable criteria







Post graduate qualification in psychological therapy such as CBT

Experience

Essential criteria

- Experience in working with pain presentations and / or running pain management programmes.
- Experience working with physical health teams / acute hospital teams

Desirable criteria

Expertise and enthusiasm in line management and clinical supervision of psychologists, trainees and assistant psychologists

Clinical

Essential criteria

- Substantial experience working with complex mental health presentations
- Substantial experience working with clinical risk, safeguarding and triage

Desirable criteria

Experience with undertaking psychological assessments for elective surgery
