Job description

Department of Physics, Denys Wilkinson Building, Oxford Applications are invited for a Post Doctoral Research Assistant in High redshift galaxie.

The post is available fixed term until the 30 April 2025 . We seek to appoint a postdoctoral researcher to work with Professor Andy Bunker and the NIRSpec Instrument Science Team (IST) on galaxy evolution at high redshift.

The NIRSpec-IST has 900 hours of Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO), and the bulk of our programme concerns galaxy evolution at high redshift.

We are undertaking an extensive spectroscopic survey with three tiers using the multi-object MSA, with the medium and deep spectroscopy obtained within the GOODS / CANDELS fields.

For this survey are working with our colleagues on the NIRCam Instrument Science Team as part of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), and we use NIRCam imaging along with existing deep imaging (particularly from HST) to target potential high redshift galaxies.

The astrophysics sub-department at Oxford has extensive research efforts in observations of high redshift galaxies, simulations of galaxy evolution, and large surveys.

It is expected that the postdoctoral researcher will work with Professor Bunker at Oxford and with the wider NIRSpec-IST and JADES collaboration in the field of galaxy evolution at high redshift using JWST and potentially observations from other observatories.

The postdoctoral position is supported by an Advanced Grant awarded to Professor Andy Bunker by the European Research Council.

To research galaxy evolution through the analysis and interpretation of spectroscopy of high redshift galaxies. To attend relevant team meetings and present work.

To work within an international collaboration,

to report to the broader team (the NIRSpec-IST and the JADES collaboration), and to adhere to the collaboration agreement and publication policy.

To also conduct independent research in the area of galaxy evolution. To contribute ideas for new research projects, review and refine working hypotheses, and adapt existing and develop new scientific techniques to meet the goals of the project.

To collaborate in the preparation of scientific papers and publish the research in refereed journals. To attend international conferences to promote your own research, that of the Oxford group and that of the wider collaborationTo promote your work to the general public through active engagement.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach if they wish.

This may include lecturing, small group teaching, and tutoring of undergraduates and graduate students.

- Hold a Ph.D. / D.Phil in astrophysics or relevant field.
