Job Summary

An exciting opportunity to join the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Devices, digital and robotics (NIIHR HRC-DDR), part of Research Development and Innovation at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. The HRC-DDR is a research infrastructure funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) who support the development and testing of novel medical devices and health technologies. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Portfolio Manager to provide professional research management expertise to oversee the delivery of health technology research studies.







Working with technology innovators the HRC-DDR guide partners through the complex regulatory process for medical devices and health technologies by completing human factors usability testing, device functionality testing, health economic evaluations, patient and public involvement work and first in human clinical investigations. The post holder will oversee a number of these activities for multiple projects within the programme at the same time.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

The post holder will work under the direction of the Programme Manager with responsibility for research related admin activity associated with HRC-DDR projects. The successful candidate is expected to develop a full understanding and an overview of the team's workload including all research applications and studies. The post holder will ensure that Clinical Research Trials/medical device studies are set up within both internal and external NHS objectives and targets.

The post holder is required to work using their own initiative on a regular basis and manage their own workload; this will require excellent planning and organisational skills.





The post-holder will also have management responsibilities for members the HRC-DDR Team and expected to have line management experience. The post holder must be able to communicate information to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders, i.e. clinical and operational staff, other NIHR Infrastructures, national funding bodies, charities and commercial partners, in a range of formats. Using their own judgment the post holder will be able to prioritise their workload effectively, demonstrate clear attention to detail and problem solve as necessary.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential

- Degree or equivalent professional qualification, management qualification (e.g. DMS, DipHSM, etc.) plus acquired training to masters level or equivalent experience
- Experience of further academic/personal development






- Understanding of range of work practices, majority non-routine with intermediate level of theoretical knowledge i.e. good understanding of the R&D; processes
- In-depth understanding of clinical research and trial management methodology, including applicable regulatory requirements
- Sound understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and the EU clinical trials directive (especially medical devices)

Desirable

- Clinical/research experience
- Project Management qualification

Experience

Essential

- Evidence of developing team / others
- HR - day to day supervision/management of staff and delivers training on a range of subjects
- Experience of project management, working with the NHS
- Evidence of good written and oral presentation skills






- Understanding of clinical trial methodologies & logistics
- Evidence of experience in risk management and service improvement

Desirable

- Operational management experience working within a NHS environment working with clinicians and other health care professionals at all levels of the organisation
- Evidence of managing service/organisational change
- Evidence of innovation in managerial and service terms
- Experience implementing health technologies within the NHS.

Additional Criteria

Essential

- The post holder sometimes may be required to work out of normal office hours
- The post holder will be expected to travel for national NIHR HRC activities.
