Full time starting salary is normally in the range £32,296 to £34,866 with potential progression once in post to £39,105

Grade: 6

Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to March 2027

Background

OncoEng is a UKRI EPSRC funded flagship programme grant concerned with research into interventions for metastatic bone disease in the spine. It comprises a collaboration between the University of Birmingham (Lead organisation),





Imperial College London, University of Leeds University College London. With this consortium the role aims to develop and implement new techniques to assess long term fatigue and fracture mechanisms within metastatic infiltrated spinal vertebrae and how these fractures may be prevented using novel minimally invasive implants. Specifically, this role aims to support employed researchers on the OncoEng programme. You will contribute to the lab management and administration, design and delivery of research tasks, CAD/CAM design of components and aid with the day-to-day delivery of research conducted within the labs. A passion for solving complex problems is also required.

Main Duties

- Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews






- Analyse research data as directed
- Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
- Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
- Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research
- Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
- Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research
- Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture
- Delivering cutting edge research in the specified area – biomechanics and mechanical engineering design






- Collaborating with researchers within OncoEng and internationally to support the aims of OncoEng; including advanced methods and techniques;
- Ensuring good report and management practices internally and with stakeholders; meeting attendance
- Delivering the outcomes guided by the research aims and objectives including the necessary training required to advance the project
- Disseminating research results through recognised forms of output such as publications, conferences or public engagement

Person Specification

- UG Degree or equivalent in relevant subject area
- Practical experience of applying the relevant skills and techniques
- Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively






- Ability to access and organise resources successfully
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
- Extensive CAD/CAM skills for use in mechanical engineering design
- A proven track record in designing, validating and utilising mechanical engineering and electro-mechanical apparatus
- A demonstrable evidence of skills and experience for the analysis of differing design options and basing the final solution on a range of criteria that may include economic factors
- A strong background/interest in biomechanics and/or material characterisation






- A demonstrable aptitude for experimental engineering with a strong understanding of the underpinning engineering science
- Good time management and planning skills; ability to meet tight deadlines and work effectively under pressure
- Excellent communication skills
- Proven ability to manage competing demands effectively, responsibly and without close support
- proven ability to work well both individually and in a team
