Job summary

A wonderful opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic band 6 Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and dedicated Blood Sciences Night team at Charing Cross Hospital working in Clinical Biochemistry and Serology Department. North West London.

Pathology operates as a hub and spoke model for the provision of pathology services, with Charing Cross Hospital operating as the hub pathology site.

The department is a state of the art facility and one of the largest laboratories within the UK.







The laboratory is covered 24 hours every day and the successful candidate would be expected to participate in the night worker rota which contributes to the continuity and quality of care for patients in the Trust hospitals.

Staffs' are expected to travel across our six hospital sites when required.

The laboratory has IBMS training approval for training for Registration and Specialist Portfolios in Blood Sciences.

Applications are sought from self-motivating individuals who are currently registered with the HCPC. Ideal candidates should have minimum 2 years post registration experience.

Previous experience in a multi-discipline environment and automated instruments or Abbott Alinity would be an advantage.

Applicants must have a desire to learn and develop within our busy laboratories.

Main duties of the job

- To be an efficient flexible member of the Blood Sciences laboratory providing a high quality service to Imperial College Healthcare Trust.
- To maintain the required levels of laboratory safety and good laboratory practice, as specified in local and national guidelines.






- To work with biomedical scientists and clinical scientists in the provision of a comprehensive and effective Blood Sciences service for the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, as directed by the Head of the Department.
- To participate in the efficient handling, processing and analysis of samples in the laboratory, under supervision.
- To maintain effective records of all activities and procedures, and to contribute towards the maintenance of the laboratory's quality system.
- To check, keep clean and maintain laboratory equipment.
- To carry out supervised laboratory procedures in all sections of the laboratory, as directed by the Head of the Unit and senior scientific staff.






- To undergo appropriate teaching and training as directed and as necessary in order to maintain HPC registration and to maintain suitable records of all training activities undertaken.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles).

All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.

Person Specification

EDUCATION

Essential

- Honours degree or equivalent in a biological science acceptable by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) / Health Professions Council (HCPC) for Registration.
- HCPC Registration and a clear understanding of Code of Conduct and Professional Standards of the HCPC.
- Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent in haematology / BT
- 24 months proven experience post Registration in the relevant discipline.

SKILLS / ABILITIES

Essential

- Practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work.






- Timely accurate working. Methodical.
- Ability to work under pressure
- Competence in IT skills including, spreadsheet and database software.

EXPERIENCE

Essential

- A good working knowledge of specialist subject in relevant discipline
- Use of Pathology computer systems

Desirable

- Previous experience in a large busy laboratory
