Job summary

An exciting new opportunity for a 6 month fixed term Band 7 Clinical Psychologist working across outpatient clinics and inpatient settings.

Working within a highly supportive team, this role will provide psychological support for patients living with chronic lung conditions.

Clinical work involves provision of psychological assessment and intervention to support physical and mental health for individuals living with a range of lung conditions, for example chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease and bronchiectasis, amongst others, as well as contributing to the multi-disciplinary healthcare and staff education.







The appointee will receive professional management and clinical supervision from the lead psychologist and will be part of a team of psychologists working in physical health within the heart, lung and critical care clinical group and more widely a professional network of over 150 psychologists working in health across the Trust.

There will be opportunities to attend regular psychology meetings and education sessions as part of a programme of continuing professional development.

The appointee will be registered with the HCPC as a practitioner psychologist. Experience of working with physical health problems is desirable.

The post holder will work autonomously within professional practice and Trust guidelines.

Main duties of the job

Based at the Royal Brompton Hospital site, you will provide a specialist clinical health psychology service to chronic lung patients, with an emphasis on outpatient clinics, with some inpatient work.

- The clinical aim is to alleviate distress and improve the delivery of healthcare and treatment outcomes. The work involves :





provision of specialist psychological assessment and psychological interventions to patients, carers and families;
- multidisciplinary working and consultation to staff; liaison with, and referral to, community mental health services; teaching and training;

audit and research. The clinical work takes place through an understanding of a patient's health issues and needs, in the context of health beliefs, coping styles, background and socio-cultural issues.

The service operates within clinical psychology professional guidelines and the overall framework of Trust policies and procedures.

Job responsibilities

- To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the clinical health psychology service based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complexdata from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients,





family members and others involved in the patients care.
- To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and / or management of a clients mental health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the clients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.
- To receive regular clinical professional supervision from the lead clinical psychologist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.

Person Specification

Skills and abilities

Essential

- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
- Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively,





orally and in writing, complex highly technical and / or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues

Desirable

- Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups
- High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies.

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity

Desirable

- Experience of teaching,





training and / or supervision.
- Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
- Experience of assessing and treating clients across the full range of care settings, including cardiothoracic surgery, respiratory medicine, cystic fibrosis.

Education and qualifications

Essential

Doctoral level training in clinical psychology or its equivalent

Desirable

- Pre and / or post-doctoral training in one or more additional specialised areas of psychological practice especially relevant to cardiothoracic care.
