Job description

Job summary

The post holder will provide speech and language, assessment, intervention to young pre-school children. The role will also involve consultation and liaison between varies services.

This post will involve travelling between boroughs as required.

The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with other CAMHS colleagues within the pathway, families and their infants and young children to ensure that they are actively involved in setting goals and planning their care, parents / carers and with colleagues in Health, Education and Social Services in planning and delivery of services.

Main duties of the job

1.





To manage a defined caseload of preschool children with speech language and communication needs. This includes :

Gaining appropriate consent

Assessment and differential diagnosis of individual children's needs

Planning, delivering and evaluating treatment programs in close collaboration with colleagues

Referring on to other services / professionals as appropriate

Negotiating with parents / carers, and others around individual case management

Provision of written clinical reports and care plans.

Seeking support on the management of more complex cases

2. To provide advice and programs to others, nursery staff and family hub / children center staff, regarding the management and care of children and young people with speech, language, and communication needs

3. To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and manage clinical risk within defined caseload.

4. To develop the ability to monitor and reflect on auditory, visual, and kinesthetic aspects of client's communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness.

Job responsibilities

CLINICAL

1. TRAINING AND SUPERVISION

1. To work as an autonomous practitioner being responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through CPD activities and maintain a portfolio,





which reflects personal development.

To keep up to date with new techniques and developments for the promotion and maintenance of good practice in provision of SLT to school age children with special educational needs and disability.

2. To access appraisal within an Individual Performance Review framework ensuring that the objectives set reflect the Service and Trust plans.

3. To contribute to support / team meetings organized for SLT and the broader Paediatric therapy team to give and receive support.

2. GENERAL

- All staff are responsible for the continual compliance with CQC standards and outcomes.
- The postholder must be aware of, and work in line with, the Trusts Safeguarding Adults and Children procedures.

To contribute to the development of best practice within the service.







To maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, and procedures in relation to childrens mental health and social care needs.

3. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

All staff are required to be appraised by their line managers at least once a year at a personal development review meeting where progress made over the last year is discussed and agreed.

Focus on the following years departmental and personal objectives will be identified, discussed, and agreed. Where necessary, help and support will be provided, and development opportunities agreed in line with service provision and the knowledge and skills competency framework.

Person Specification

Education

Essential

- Recognized speech and language therapy degree or equivalent






- Registration with the Health Professions Council for License to Practice
- Registered member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists

Desirable

oAttendance at post graduate training courses appropriate to the area applied for 0-5 and pre-school children

Skills / Abilities

Essential

- oConfident and experienced in delivering training
- oAble to construct clear care plans differentiating appropriate intervention types from a range of options, based on analysis of information from assessment
- Demonstrates the importance of gaining families' view of their strengths and needs and supporting them to be active in the goal setting process.
- oAbility to write reports using accessible language and demonstrating clinical reasoning.

Desirable

oUnderstanding of evidence-based clinical practice and the ability to demonstrate how this influences good clinical practice.

Experience / Knowledge

Essential

- oExperience of working as a Speech and Language Therapist or Speech and Language Therapy student in an Education setting with pre-school children
- oExperience of working in a mental health setting, managing, and monitoring risk
- oExperience of working with nursery, school and parents and engaging them in interventions
- oA knowledge of SEN and national documents providing support and guidance to schools on supporting children with SEN
- oExperience of different intervention methods for children of preschool age

Desirable

- oExperience of conducting general mental health assessments
- oExperience of advising families with children with feeding and drinking difficulties

Personal Qualities

Essential

- oGood communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to work as part of a team and be proactive in-service development.
- oDemonstrates empathy with clients, carers, and families often where barriers to understanding exist ensuring that effective communication is achieved to persuade and motivate participation in therapeutic activities

Other Requirements

Essential

- oFrequent and intense use of highly developed auditory discrimination, perceptual and well-developed concentration skills for the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of clients
- oAble to make own effective travel arrangements and willingness to travel across the three boroughs
- oFlexible approach and openness to innovation
