The Business Architecture Division is recruiting permanently for up to three SEO roles. This campaign is open to current civil servants and external candidates.

Location

National.

As an MoJ employee based in an MoJ building, our minimum expectation is that you will attend a workplace at least 40% of the time. Arrangements will vary depending on the space available at your base location and where it is possible, 60% in-office working is expected. Travelling to see your team alongside any other travel to different sites will be classed as a day’s office attendance.

is responsible for everything that goes into running the UK’s criminal and civil justice systems, creating the foundations for a safe, fair and prosperous society. We are one of the largest government departments with around 90,000 staff based across England and Wales. We are responsible for 500 courts and tribunals, 122 prisons, the policies underpinning the system and much more.

Background

We are recruiting for up to three Senior Advisers for the Business Architecture Division. They will work with Grade 7 leads on portfolios focused on supporting the Department around its core workforce, infrastructure, skills and capability needs in the long term. They will support on the development of an organisational strategy to support and guide decision making of Ministers and senior leaders into the future. These stretching roles will give successful candidates the opportunity to shape key workstreams and contribute to the development of the team culture and performance.

What we do







The Business Architecture Division is a new team at the heart of the MoJ within COO Group, and will help identify opportunities and in turn formulate a strategy to improve the way services are delivered, the organisation is structured and ensure we invest in the right skills and capability for our future workforce. They will work hand in hand with colleagues across the department, and closely with core People, Strategy and Strategic Finance colleagues in the preparation, delivery and implementation of fiscal and political events for the MoJ.

The team has three immediate priorities:

- To develop a long-term 2040 organisational strategy alongside a new target operating model for MoJ.






- To lead and where required influence critical thinking and decision making about MoJ’s capabilities, workforce and organisational structure.
- To encourage the use of business architecture tools and methodologies to inform more effective and impactful decision making. ​

Senior Adviser – Business Architecture – Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a new Directorate. You will be responsible for (among other things):

- Contributing to the development of the MoJ organisational strategy, supporting on one or more specific thematic area/s, that sets out the department’s future workforce, skills, capability and infrastructure agenda.
- Nurturing relationships with key stakeholders across people, strategy,





strategic finance and others to ensure that cross-department ambitions are aligned to the future organisational strategy, decisions made are informed by this, and that we are progressive organising ourselves according to our necessary future departmental capabilities.
- Working across the MoJ, its agencies and arms-length bodies (ALBs), and other key stakeholders internally and externally, to drive forward the agenda for pan-MoJ Business Architecture ambitions.
- Supporting in the preparation, delivery and implementation of fiscal and political events for the MoJ through the lens of your thematic area/s

In practice, this can include a wide range of activities – such as drafting clear advice to ministers or senior officials to enable decisions to be taken; running workshops with policy, strategy,





functional and operational teams across the department; preparing papers or slide packs to support discussions; presenting your work at meetings; briefing ministers or senior officials in person or in writing; or scoping and delivering projects to help the department answer important strategic questions about our future as an organisation.

Person Specification

These SEO roles will be central to progressing the work of Business Architecture, actively working across a broad portfolio and supporting the senior management team for the Business Architecture Division. We are looking for highly motivated people with demonstrable experience operating and delivering in a large scale and complex organisation where transformation and change are prioritised.





Business Architecture experience whilst desirable is not essential. We encourage anyone who can evidence the skills required below to apply.

Essential

- Highly motivated, proactive, and driven to achieve individual and collective objectives.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to build and maintain strong relationships. Able to influence across the department and beyond to ensure that your work has maximum impact.
- The ability to develop an understanding of how your work fits into the department’s priorities and provide strategic insight, drawing on your understanding of the wider context to ensure your work is clear, effective and relevant.
- Strong problem-solving skills, bringing structure to complex issues and able to draw sound conclusions.






- Ability to draw on a range of evidence and analysis to deliver high-quality advice.
- Strong prioritisation skills and the ability to make effective decisions on how to structure your work and work autonomously.
- Openness to challenge and able to effectively navigate conflicting priorities.

Desirable

- Experience working in the field of business architecture within the public or the private sector.
- Academic or practical qualifications in the field of business architecture.

- Flexible working patterns

At the moment, the majority of staff are working flexibly between their office base and home,





with at least two days per week in their office base expected.

If we receive applications from more suitable candidates than we have vacancies for at this time, we may hold suitable applicants on a reserve list for 12 months, and future vacancies requiring the same skills and experience could be offered to candidates on the reserve list without a new competition.

Annex A - The STAR method

Using the STAR method can help you give examples of relevant experience that you have. It allows you to set the scene, show what you did, and how you did it, and explain the overall outcome.

Situation - Describe the situation you found yourself in. You must describe a specific event or situation. Be sure to give enough detail for the job holder to understand.

- Where are you?
- Who was there with you?
- What had happened?

Task - The job holder will want to understand what you tried to achieve from the situation you found yourself in.

- What was the task that you had to complete and why?
- What did you have to achieve?

Actions - What did you do? The job holder will be looking for information on what you did, how you did it and why. Keep the focus on you. What specific steps did you take and what was your contribution? Remember to include how you did it, and the behaviours you used. Try to use “I” rather than “we” to explain your actions that lead to the result. Be careful not to take credit for something that you did not do.

Results - Don’t be shy about taking credit for your behaviour. Quote specific facts and figures. Explain how the outcome benefitted the organisation or your area. Make the outcomes easily understandable.

- What results did the actions produce?
- What did you achieve through your actions and did you meet your goals?
- Was it a successful outcome? If not, what did you learn from the experience?

Keep the situation and task parts brief. Concentrate on the action and the result. If the result was not entirely successful describe what you learned from this and what you would do differently next time. Make sure you focus on your strengths.
