The Vacancy

We are looking for a Senior Database Engineer to help provide technical leadership for the team responsible for database build and support for IT systems throughout De La Rue. You will work as part of a wider Infrastructure and Data Services team providing the fabric on which industry leading IT solutions are built. You will be actively involved in the technical design and roadmap activities of the infrastructure team and build relationships with key stakeholders and suppliers. You will identify areas where standards can be developed and processes improved, and work with the team to implement those improvements, taking ownership of service requests,





incidents and problems within the Platforms team.

Key Responsibilities

- Providing technical expertise to the wider infrastructure and Data team and input on technical projects as required
- Delivering consistency and accuracy in requests for change ensuring customer expectations are met during change implementation / rollback
- Ensuring maintenance of documentation and sharing of knowledge across the DBA team
- Maintaining an up-to-date skill set, keeping abreast of industry developments and making recommendations as to how IT teams can perform better
- Day-to-day monitoring of databases to ensure all systems are available
- Responding within SLAs to service requests, incidents and problems using the service management tool
- Raising requests for change, documenting step by step activities required for successful completion, testing and if necessary, roll-back of changes
- Ability to work under pressure and focus on resolving business critical issues, and deliver to strict deadlines






- Working within an ITIL framework to manage incidents, problems and system changes

Base location: Basingstoke / Gateshead

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

- Educated to degree level or equivalent work experience.
- Demonstrable experience in 2nd or 3rd line IT support and possess ability to analyse, diagnose and fix problems and then works to find the root cause
- Enquiring approach to work, a methodical approach to solving problems and an attention to detail
- Experience of Linux and Windows platforms
- Experience of providing technical leadership to a team of DBAs with a diverse range of skills
- Experience of public cloud environments, preferably Microsoft Azure, and cost optimisation techniques






- Ability to work with people across the organisation
- Experience of working in an ITIL environment, ideally possesses an ITIL Foundation qualification
- Understanding of the principles of business continuity and disaster recovery
- Good interpersonal skills
- Strong Analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to drive change through to completion, be creative and overcome obstacles / blockers to progress
- Possess an ability to work independently but also support more junior members of the team
- Ability to produce technical documentation to a high standard
- Good verbal, written communication and interpersonal skills
- Experienced with all editions of MS SQL Server from 2008 to current version.
- Experience of supporting different DBMSs (SQL or NoSQL)





ideally including SQL Server, PostgreSQL and Cassandra
- Disaster Recovery including MS Clustering, Backup & Restore methodologies.
- Data Warehouse exposure (Primarily Support ideally Design and Development)
- Performance Tuning and Optimization using native and bespoke tools
- Good understanding of DBMS security and best practices
- Good understanding of ETL and ELT concepts
