Job summary
The post is for a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon within the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. We are looking for a candidate with specific training or experience in aortic surgery to join our expanding aortic programme.
The post is designed to help to deliver activity in adult cardiac services delivering approximately 900-1,000 cases per annum and thoracic workload of up to 500 cases per annum.
Main duties of the job

The post is designed to help to deliver activity in adult cardiac services delivering approximately 900-1,000 cases per annum and thoracic workload of up to 500 cases per annum.
The expectation is that the workload will amount to up to 2 job planned all-day operating lists per week although the number of lists may vary from week-to-week;
There will be a 1 half day outpatient clinic per week. Multi-disciplinary Team meetings are held at RWT and also at neighbouring referral centres.
It is expected to participate and support the established TAVI programme.

General
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to provide a service in Cardiothoracic Surgery with responsibility for adult cardiac surgery.
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the out-of-hours On-Call service for the department.
This includes being on-call for telephone advice and major incidents.
- To provide cover for Consultant and Senior colleagues in respect of periods of leave.
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
- To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.
Junior Medical Staff
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues,
to take responsibility for and devote time to teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required for junior medical staff.
Management & Service Development
- In conjunction with Divisional Manager, Consultant and Senior Colleagues, to take an active role in the management of the Division.
- In conjunction with the Divisional Manager, Consultant & Senior colleagues, to play a full part in developing & implementing new ways of working in line with modernisation principles and fit for the future.
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the department.
- To observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff,
and to follow the Trusts Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions.
These policies and procedures have been drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters.
Clinical Governance
In conjunction with Consultant colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
Health & Safety
- To take responsibility for your own Health & Safety complying with any safe working arrangements, policies and procedures which are in place.
- To accept a duty to other staff and patients to ensure that any hazards are reported and managed appropriately.
Any Other Duties
Any other duties as deemed appropriate.
