Job summary
Applications are invited for an exceptional candidate to join the Critical Care Directorate as a full-time Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and General Anaesthesia based at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, with some cover also provided at the nearby University Hospital Llandough.
This is an exciting time to join the Health Board with reconfiguration of the Critical Care footprint and planned expansion of our services in line with growing demand.
Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £100,000 per annum to £146,000 per annum.
Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment / training history in full.
In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will join a team of 27 Consultants in Intensive Care who have a variety of special interests including renal medicine, trauma, research, emergency surgery, and neurosciences and a team of 110 Consultants in General Anaesthesia with sessions available in a variety of disciplines including General Surgery, Vascular, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics,
ENT Head & Neck Surgery, Ophthalmology, Trauma, Major Trauma and Gynaecological Surgery.
There are excellent links with Cardiff University and Health Education & Improvement Wales (HEIW). As a teaching unit, we are driving forward a programme of medical education, international research, and innovations in intensive care.

Qualifications
Essential
- On GMC Specialist Register for Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR (Combined Programme) due within 6 months of interview date
- Postgraduate ICM qualification FICM, DICM, EDIC or equivalent
- Postgraduate qualification in Anaesthesia FRCA or equivalent
Desirable
- Echocardiography qualifications FICE, BSE accreditation
- Ultrasound qualification (CUSIC competent)
Experience
Essential
- Broad experience in adult critical care
- Experience of working in specialty critical care neurosurgery, trauma
- Familiarity with inter-hospital transfer of critically ill patients
- Familiarity of ultrasound and / or Echo
- Broad training and experience in Anaesthesia
