Job summary

This is a new consultant post in paediatric hepatobiliary and transplant surgery, created to provide continuity of highly specialised hepatobiliary surgery (HPB), liver, intestinal and renal transplantation as part of a strategic succession plan.

The post-holder will also be involved in developing donor procurement services that benefit paediatric recipients.

The successful applicant will be based within the Liver Unit at Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital (BWC). Surgical activity, including Transplant on-call, will be shared with one Consultant Transplant Surgeon also based at BWC and the Liver Transplant Team based at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust (UHB).







Paediatric HPB will be shared with two Paediatric HBP Surgeons at BWC. Dependent on experience, they will also be expected to participate in the renal transplant programme or will train in post to acquire sufficient skills to be autonomous within 2 years of appointment.

The renal transplant rota is shared with two Liver Unit Surgeons and one urologist. They will also work closely with the organ procurement team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust.

Applicants will be expected to work very closely with Paediatric hepatologists and with the wider, extensive MDT team as well as the renal transplant team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be undertaking paediatric Liver, Bowel, Renal and Multi-visceral transplants and related activities.

In addition, they will also undertake paediatric HPB surgery. This is a strategic succession post and the postholder will be expected to develop their skills under the supervision of senior colleagues.







The successful candidate will be expected to be an active member of the Liver Unit and Renal Transplant MDT discussions.

- The clinical duties will be as follows :
- On-call for all pre-and post-transplant related work.
- Evaluation and management of patients re-admitted for surgical complications.
- Daily ward round, evaluation of patients and making the management plans.
- Attendance at multi-disciplinary team meetings (Histology, Radiology, - - Transplant, MDT ward rounds).
- Participation in elective surgical lists.
- Conducting the post-transplant clinic.
- Undertake additional renal transplant training to achieve autonomous practice (dependent on the postholders skills).
- Participate in the development of Normothermic Regional Perfusion organ procurement, application of new graft ex-vivo perfusion techniques and the living donor programmes,





in conjunction with UHB colleagues.
- Participate in the on-call rotas for the Liver Unit including cross-cover to allow colleagues leave.

Essential







- GMC Registration / Eligible for inclusion on Specialist Register as Paediatric Surgeon
- FRCS or equivalent by examination

Desirable

- Eligible for inclusion on Specialist Register as Adult transplant / hepatobiliary surgeon
- APLS, ATLS or equivalent

KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

Essential

- Experience in Paediatric transplant surgery, including liver splitting & reduction and multi-organ retrieval and management of complications
- Experience in Small Bowel Transplantation
- Experience in Paediatric hepatobiliary surgery
- Experience in research, publications and audit

Desirable

- Experience in Renal transplantation
- Experience of normothermic regional perfusion procurement

ANALYTICAL AND JUDGEMENT SKILLS

Essential

- Ability to interpret outcome and activity data and impact on service delivery






- Ability to conduct audits and support quality improvement programmes

PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

Essential

Should be competent in basic computer skills and experience with using clinical IT systems

Desirable

- Valid Good Clinical Practice certificate in clinical research (Paediatric)
- Experience and / or formal qualification in training and educational supervision
- Experience in change management
