Job summary

Redbridge Mental Health Support Team (MHST) are hoping to recruit a Clinical Supervisor who is passionate about early intervention for CYP MH.

What is an MHST?

MHSTs are a national initiative in response to the Governments plans to transform children and young peoples mental health provision.

MHSTs have three core functions :

- Delivering evidence-based interventions for children and young people with mild-moderate mental health difficulties
- Supporting the senior mental health lead in the delivery of their whole school / college approach
- Giving timely advice to school and college staff and signposting to external specialist services

Our MHST sits alongside a well-established team of Educational Psychologists (EPs) who are committed to achieving positive outcomes for children and young people and Redbridge Educational Well-Being Team (REWT) a creative and well-regarded team providing universal whole school support to our schools.

Our MHST offers a consultation model of service delivery which values a systemic and relational approach.

Redbridge MHST established in 2021 and have since expanded in line with the national role out of MHSTs. We are currently recruiting for our next expansion phase due to join us in Autumn 2024.

Main duties of the job

This is a fantastic opportunity for an applicant who is passionate about supporting early intervention around children and young peoples mental health.

We are seeking applicants from Educational / Clinical Psychologists,





Social Workers and Systemic Family Therapists and are open to shaping the role depending on professional expertise.

The main duties of the role involve :

- delivering evidence-based intervention directly to children, young people and their families, both individually and in groups.
- supervising Education Mental Health Practitioners who deliver low-intensity CBT based guided self-help interventions to children, young people and their families.

This includes group supervision and individual case management supervision.

providing whole school mental health support to school staff and the wider community. This may include a range of work from training and projects to parent / carer support and borough wide campaigns.







Applicants will need to hold a post graduate diploma in the Children and Young Peoples Mental Health Supervision or be willing to undertake the one year Post Graduate Diploma at a London University alongside the role.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Supervisor will support the development of the MHST initiative within Redbridge, under the direction of the team manager.

The Supervisor will work closely with the senior mental health leads in schools to ensure a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing.

These leads will work closely with the MHSTs to ensure children and young people get the right help as soon as possible.

The Supervisor will be responsible for the caseload management & supervision of the EMHPs who will be providing direct help to children,





young people and parents in educational settings by offering rapid access to low intensity, evidence-based interventions, for mild to moderate mental health difficulties.

The Supervisor will oversee the formulation and support for schools, parents, children and young people being known to the MHST using a range of specialist psychological interventions appropriate to the service

The Supervisor will carry out direct joint work with children, young people and parents / carers as part of their work in the Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs)

The Supervisor will attend team meetings as required.

The Supervisor will contribute to the initiation, development and implementation of new responses to changing needs and demands upon the team







The Supervisor will hold a post graduate diploma in the Children and Young Peoples Mental Health Supervision or be willing to undertake the one year Post Graduate Diploma at a London University alongside the role.

General accountabilities and responsibilities :

- To provide specialist mental health assessments and interventions for schools, parents, children and young people at an individual, group and whole school level.
- To provide supervision of the intervention work of the EMHPs when they are working independently and to provide this for all EMHPs.
- Support EMHP staff in the co-delivery of training sessions. This will include attendance at practice skills sessions, involvement in formative feedback sessions with teaching staff, and co-production of elements of the curriculum.






- Prepare and present case load information within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, to ensure safe practice and the governance obligations of EMHPs, supervisor and service are delivered.
- To attend, as required, a range of interagency meetings to represent the service, in a delegated role, offering guidance, where appropriate, ensuring that issues relating to the service are noted and brought to the attention of service managers / leads.
- Keep coherent records of all activity in line with service protocols and use these records and outcome data to inform decision-making.

Complete all requirements relating to data collection.

- To undertake risk assessments following referral
- To manage and screen referrals into the MHST.






- Attend and fulfil any requirements of the training element of the post including practical, academic and practice-based assessments.

This would include reviewing videos and case reports of the EMHPs where appropriate.

Specific accountabilities and responsibilities for Clinical Psychologists Discipline

- To provide clinical psychology perspective on children and young peoples needs, promoting holistic assessment which considers their family and history, environment, education, religion, culture, and social circumstances.
- To contribute psychological perspective to planning and development of the MHST alongside the wider clinical team.
- To lead on the continuing professional development of junior clinicians.
- To lead on the development of new therapeutic support in schools

Specific accountabilities and responsibilities for Family and Systemic Therapists Discipline

- To provide a systemic family therapy perspective on children and young peoples needs, promoting holistic assessment which considers their family and history, environment, education, religion, culture, and social circumstances.
- Contribute systemic family therapy perspective to planning and development alongside the wider clinical team.
- To draw on relevant training to be able to conceptualize the needs of an educational setting at an organizational level in order to contribute to the MHST Whole School Approach.

Specific accountabilities and responsibilities for Social Workers Discipline

- To provide a professional social work perspective on children and young peoples needs, promoting holistic assessment which considers their family and history, environment, education, religion or culture and social circumstances.
- Contribute social work and safeguarding expertise to planning and development alongside the wider clinical team.
- To provide advice and support on the delivery of social learning theory based parenting interventions at a group and individual interventions within educational settings.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

- Significant experience of utilising a range of professional skills at post-qualifying level in a child and adolescent mental health setting or educational setting.
- Evidence of understanding of educational systems and practice in England.
- Previous experience in supervision, preferably with CYP-IAPT Supervision training or supervising junior clinicians or trainees.
- Ability to deliver evidence-based intervention to children, young people and their families.
- Evidence of collaborative working practice with other professionals and parents / carers.
- Belief in involving children and young people in decisions regarding their education and clear commitment to supporting the development of children and young people.
- Ability to personally manage a sensitive, traumatic, and potentially emotionally distressing caseload and demonstrate appropriate coping mechanisms.
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to change.
- Understanding of inclusive practices which promote person centred approaches.
- Ability to chair team meetings, undertake delegated management tasks and support the Service Manager in general team tasks / development as required.
- Able to describe and discuss different ways of problem solving in educational settings.
- To give examples of working with diverse groups of people.
- Awareness of safeguarding and risk management practices when working with children and young people.
- Experience of working with mild to severe mental health difficulties.
- Broad knowledge of specialist mental health services and the wider network of mental health services.
- Commitment to collaborative working with other professionals and parents.
- Demonstrated skill in project leadership and systems change in a multi-disciplinary context.

- Experience of safeguarding practice, working with children subject to a child protection plan, identifying and managing risk.
- Experience providing advice and support on the delivery of social learning theory based parenting interventions at a group and individual interventions within educational settings.
- Experience leading interventions to support groups of parents / carers
- Family Systemic Therapist / Clinical Psychologists Discipline only
- Ability to apply psychology at a systems level within educational settings and borough wide.
- Experience working at an organisational level to facilitate change
