Job summary

Providing a specialist service to children attending mainstream and special schools with Speech / Language and communication needs (SLCN) working closely with parents / carers, and staff to enable children to develop their speech, language and communication skills and to access the curriculum

To assess the needs for, develop and implement specialist Speech and Language Therapy treatment to children referred to the SLT Education service (mainstream and special schools).

To provide advice to others regarding the management and care of children with communication difficulties

To be accountable for own professional actions and recognise own professional boundaries,





seeking advice from senior colleagues as appropriate

The post holder will also provide some day-to-day supervision and peer review support to less experienced colleagues and students, including second opinions when necessary.

The post holder will run appropriate in-service training independently for school and other staff.

The post holder will have well developed specialist skills in a specialist area of SLCN within the broad range of speech, language and communication needs encountered within the caseload of school aged children

Main duties of the job

To assess the need for, develop and implement Speech and Language Therapy treatment to children with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties.

To make appropriate clinical decisions following assessment, using evidence-based practice and outcome measurement to provide the most effective treatment to children and their families within clearly defined care plan.

To make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment.







To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures relevant to the field, in particular in the field(s) of specialisation.

To adapt practice to meet individual children's and families' circumstances including; due regard for specific clinical conditions affecting their speech and language cognitive, cultural, religious and linguistic differences.

To maintain sensitivity at all times to the emotional needs of children and their families / carers, in particular when imparting potentially distressing information regarding the nature of the child's difficulties and implications of the same.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1) paediatric dysphagia experience with school aged children and young people (RCSLT paediatric dysphagia competencies level C or above)

2) Experience of working within educational setting and understanding of educational processes EHCPs

3) Experience of supervising and supporting the development of others in relation to dysphagia

Essential

- Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree in Speech and Language Therapy






- Health Care Professionals Council Registration to Practise AF Your healthcare closer to home Page 5 of 7 @CLCHNHSTrust
- Registered member of RCSLT with the right to work in the UK
- Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to Masters degree or equivalent in specialist area ( AAC courses)

Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks (CENs

Experience

Essential

- A minimum of 3 years' postgraduate experience working with children with complex needs who present with a range of speech, language and communication difficulties.
- Experience of carrying out assessment and differential diagnosis including complex disorders






- Experience of implementing a range of therapeutic interventions for children with complex needs in range of settings
- Experience of collaborative multi-disciplinary and inter agency working
- Extensive experience of working collaboratively with and training parents / carers, teachers, TAs and other health / education professionals.
- Experience of planning, organising and delivering training programmes
- Experience of working with children with complex needs, including learning difficulties and challenging behaviour.
- Experience of writing statutory assessment / EHCP advice
- Experience of planning and delivering therapy in small groups

Desirable

- Previous NHS experience
- Experience of implementing the principles of clinical governance in clinical practice ( clinical audits

Skills

Essential







- Well established clinical skills and experience of a broad range of standardised and functional assessment tools relevant to children with complex SLC needs and evidence-based interventions relevant to the client group
- Highly developed clinical skills and postgraduate experience in the assessment, differential diagnosis and interventions for children with complex needs who present with a range of speech, language and communication difficulties including, Down Syndrome, Learning Disabilities and Profound / Multiple Learning Disability and Autism
- Knowledge of alternative and augmentative communication systems.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team including excellent communication, liaison, negotiation, and clinical reasoning skills






- Able to synthesise and present complex information, present effective verbal and written reports for carers, colleagues and managers
- Able to identify appropriate goals and formulate care plans
- Excellent organisational, prioritisation skills and ability to facilitate these skills in others
- Able to use own initiative to organise and manage own caseload
- Excellent interpersonal skills including observation, listening, flexibility and empathy skills
- Ability to communicate complex information to others where there may be barriers to understanding
- Well-developed analytical, problem solving and reflection skills
- Good time management skills
- Good team working
- Responsive to change and ideas and adaptive and creative within new systems






- Ability to work calmly under pressure and be flexible to demands
- Ability to train pre-school / school staff to carry out communication aims with children with a range of difficulties
- Well established, up to date knowledge of national policies and procedures (relevant to the client group)
- Knowledge of standards of record keeping and ability to audit this in own team
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures
- Understanding of statutory processes regarding education for children with special education needs.
- Ability to manage complaints and prevent escalation wherever possible
- IT literate and able to use a range of specialist programmes

Desirable

- Experience of contributing to service development projects.
- An ability to speak a non-European language.
- Good supervision skills and experience of supervising Student Speech and Language Therapists.
