Job summary

Requiredto fill this new, full-time post. Gastroenterology and Endoscopyservices are part of the Abdominal Medicine and Surgery Clinical Service Unit.

All acute surgical, gastroenterology and acute medical wards areco-located in 3 adjacent wings. Gastroenterologyin-patient services are provided by two wards in the modern Bexley wing.

In this wing are also Upper GI and HPBsurgery wards and the transplant hepatology wards. The medical admissions ward and EmergencyDept are in the adjacent Chancellors Wing.

Colorectal and the acute surgery wards are located nearby in Lincolnwing. These adjacencies are designed toprovide an efficient streamlined service for in-patient services.







The gastroenterology wards accept patients with the full range ofgastroenterology problems including gastrointestinal haemorrhage, inflammatorybowel disease, complex nutritional issues and acute liver problems.

Within the department there are strong clinicalinterests in luminal gastroenterology (IBD, nutrition, small bowel disease andtherapeutic endoscopy) and a strong academic interest focusing on colonicdiseases and database research.

The newappointee will support existing gastroenterology services. Within general gastroenterology, there is astrong emphasis on the delivery of outpatient access targets and reduced lengthof inpatient stay

Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be includedon the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview,if currently within a training programme within the UK.

In accordance with the consultant appointmentregulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the SpecialistRegister.







Applicants should haveestablished skills in gastroenterologyand its related specialties including nutrition.A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teachingand a research interest is desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicantswho wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

In relation to this post,the Department of Gastroenterology is looking to appoint a Gastroenterologistwith an interest in nutrition and intestinal failure to support our provisionas one of the largest IF centres in the UK.

Thisis an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growing intestinal failureworkload and help shape a developing service.

As a major teaching hospital,





surgical centre and home to - amongstother specialisms - the Yorkshire Cancer Centre, our in-patient intestinal failureand nutrition work spans the full range of Types I, II and III intestinalfailure.

Our success is such that we now have approximately200 home parenteralnutrition patients and the current model of multi-disciplinary led care workswell, but the growing workload would benefit from extra consultantleadership.

This will enable improvedpatient experience with better outcomes.

Inaddition, the postholder will contribute to outpatient and endoscopy targetsand will take part in general gastroenterology inpatient care, as illustratedin the representative job plan.

- Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in gastroenterology in and outpatients.
- Specifically, he / she must demonstrate expertise in managing patients with complex nutritional needs / intestinal failure.
- Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

Desirable

Experience in training endoscopic skills.

Qualifications

Essential

- MBBS MBChb or equivalent qualification.
- MRCP or equivalent qualification.
- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE STATED ON YOUR APPLICATION FORM FOR YOU TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE ROLE.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.

Desirable

Relevant higher degree. MD / PhD

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit

Essential







- Should have completed a recognised training programme in Gastroenterology. Eligible for inclusion on the GMC specialist register for Gastroenterology / CCT in gastroenterology.
- JAG accreditation in endoscopy or equivalent.
- Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
- Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
- Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.

Desirable

- Additional experience of IBD.
- Evidence of previous research / publication record.
- Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
- Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.

Further Criteria

Essential

- Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.






- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via :
- CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process
