Job summary

This position is an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in developing a career in otology. There is a large volume of patients requiring standard and more complex otological management and it is anticipated that this individual will quickly build a waiting list to manage the backlog.

There are ample opportunities to develop super-specialist interests within this field in the department and carry out QiP and research in this area.

There is cross-site working between Russell's Hall and New Cross hospitals and services such as the balance service are growing to enable a more enhanced multi-disciplinary approach to patients within the Black Country region.







There is a strong paediatric service as well and our audiology service are leaders in their field nationally. Please contact Mr Barraclough for further details about what the job would entail and the opportunities available.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with existing colleagues to build on the existing practice and will be encouraged to engage actively with the further development of the unit.

The successful candidates will be given support to develop the office based ambulatory care pathways and other service improvement.

The Head & Neck ENT service deals with all aspects of oropharyngeal / neck malignancies and has a full range of support including dedicated CNS nurses, SALT and Dietetics.

The new appointees will be actively involved and expected to contribute to departmental governance and audits.

Job description

Job responsibilities

General

- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to provide a service in Ear, Nose and Throat department.
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the out-of-hours On-Call service for the department.

This includes being on-call for telephone advice and major incidents.

- To provide cover for Consultant and Senior colleagues in respect of periods of leave.
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take part in medical audit and research as appropriate.
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.






- To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary.

Junior Medical Staff

- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to play a full part in the professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for and devote time to teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required for junior medical staff.

Management & Service Development

- In conjunction with Divisional Manager, Consultant and Senior Colleagues, to take an active role in the management of the Division.
- In conjunction with the Divisional Manager, Consultant & Senior colleagues, to play a full part in developing & implementing new ways of working in line with modernisation principles and fit for the future.






- In conjunction with Consultant and Senior colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the department.
- To observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, in particular in relation to managing staff, and to follow the Trusts Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions.

These policies and procedures have been drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters.

Person Specification

Consultant Otologist

Essential

- Full registration and a licence to practise with the GMC On the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT from the date of interview Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via : CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT / CESR (CP)





date must be within 6 months of interview CESR or European Community Rights
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery.

Demonstrable training and expertise in sub-specialty area to complement existing consultants

- Evidence of audit and the implementation of change following the audit
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective within ENT Surgery

Desirable

- Relevant research published in peer review journal
- Higher Medical Degree
