Job summary

The successful appointee will be practising autonomously as an Specialty Doctor within the Haematology department to provide patient-centred clinical care.

This will encompass the skills of advanced clinical assessment, examination, diagnosis and treatment within an agreed scope of practice throughout the specialty.

The post holder will support new ways of working that emphasises a more efficient and patient focused service, and will ensure the safe treatment, referral and discharge of patients whilst also providing advice, education and support to staff, patients, their families and carers.

The appointee must have significant experience of working in Haematology, Haemato-oncology,





preferably have passed the MRCP (or its equivalent), and must be registered with GMC.

The successful appointee will support outpatient clinics in General Haematology, Lymphoma and Myeloma and support day case units delivering chemotherapy.

There is a Trust-wide integrated MDT and educational programme, plus a very active clinical trials programme. The successful candidate will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team to support the management of patients with Haematology disorders and particularly Haemato-oncology care across UHB.

Main duties of the job

- The appointee will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team to support the management of patients with Haematology disorders and particularly Haemato-oncology care across UHB.
- Use expertise and decision making skills to inform clinical reasoning to appropriately treat patients, resulting in the safe management and appropriate referral or discharge of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed presentations.






- Support the HGS (Heartlands / Good Hope / Solihull) rota for consultative referrals and new acute presentations to Haematology, offering senior advice to trainees but also supported by Consultants on-call and the AOS service.
- Participate in weekly outpatient clinics and offer support to day case units for patient reviews and prescribing chemotherapy.
- Contribute to the integrated Haemato-oncology Clinical MDT, plus monthly quality meetings, weekly educational sessions and mortality and morbidity meetings.
- Depending on experience of the appointee, there is opportunity to support laboratory haematology including blood film morphology.
- Ensure that high standards of all documentation are maintained, with accurate,





complete and up-to-date information regarding patient care are kept in accordance with Trust standards.

UHB Haematology has reconfigured in 2019, following the merger of UHB and HEFT and delivers care for all of Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield and Solihull.

Inpatient haematology care is based principally at the QEHB site, which has 60+ inpatient beds and there is an additional dedicated Young Persons Unit for TYA care.

There are well developed chemotherapy day-case, outpatient and laboratory Haematology services across the acute hospital sites in Birmingham : Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) Heartlands Hospital (BHH), Good Hope Hospital (GHH) and non-acute Solihull Hospital (SH), with a network of clinics, CNS / nurse-led services and clinics,





ACP and outreach AOS provision at all sites, with Consultant led care.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

- Full registration with the GMC with licence to practice.
- Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice
- Eligibility to live and work in the UK
- Medical Degree from a recognised University

Experience

Essential

- A minimum of 4 years full time post graduate training (its equivalent gained on a part time basis) or equivalent experience and competencies.
- Experience in the management of patients with haematological malignancies and general haematology.
- Knowledge of the processes and function of clinical governance.
- Ability to work in a team.
- Good interpersonal skills.






- Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English and ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, carers and other health professionals.
- Participation in teaching activities
- Knowledge of clinical research
- Commitment to continuing personal development and medical education
- Computer Skills
