Job summary

TheColorectal Surgery Department is looking to appoint into a 6 month locumconsultant post available from September 2024.

Thesuccessful candidate will join the Colorectal Surgical team which currently has12 substantive consultants. The post-holder(s) will provide Colorectal andGeneral surgical services in theatre, outpatient and ward settings.

There will be a requirement to take part inthe departmental on-call rota. There are exciting opportunities to contributeto teaching / education programmes and research projects.

Thepost will be based at St Jamess University Teaching Hospital.

Thesuccessful applicant(s) should possess FRCS (or equivalent)





and should beincluded on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time ofinterview, if currently within a training programme within the UK.

In accordance with the consultant appointmentregulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the SpecialistRegister.

Main duties of the job

This post will initially be a 10 PA contract andthe successful applicant will join the other 12 substantive consultants (8 NHSand 4 Academic) providing colorectal surgery at LTHT.

The job will consist ofspecialist colorectal and general surgery, ward rounds, surgical outpatientclinics and day case / inpatient elective operating.

Regular colonoscopy listsare also available for individuals who have an interest. There are separateColorectal and UGI / HPB on call rotas and it is expected that the successfulcandidate will contribute to the colorectal aspect, most likely on a 1 in 10basis.







There will be exciting opportunities to engage with research andeducation in the colorectal unit and on a wider regional basis especially withrespect to intestinal failure.

The role of each Consultant in the department isintended to be as an equal senior to other Consultants in the Department and inthe Trust.

Thepost will be based at Lincoln Wing, St Jamess University Teaching Hospital.

TheJohn Goligher Colorectal Department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals has areputation for high quality education and research.

The department is currentlyengaged in a large number of national studies and trials. The department alsohas a significant reputation as a large provider of specialist andsub-specialist Colorectal services.

The department is responsible for over20,000 outpatient appointments, 1,350 elective day case operations and 1,400elective inpatient procedures.







Thecolorectal unit in SJUH is co-located with acute general surgery wards, HDU,ICU, the same day admission unit, the surgical assessment area and the genericgeneral surgery / urology 5 day wards.

The elective colorectal surgerytheatres and emergency and CEPOD theatres are also housed in the same wing atSJUH. Main site out-patient clinics are held at SJUH, whilst some peripheralclinics are held at Wharfdale Hospital.

Thegeneral surgery service in Leeds has undergone significant reorganisation inrecent years. All abdominal general surgery disciplines are now co-located onthe SJUH site.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

To deliver care to patients withColorectal and General Surgical conditions at St Jamess University TeachingHospital including

Out-patient clinics

Elective operating both day case andinpatient

Care of in-patients







To link with Consultant colleagues inother relevant site specialist teams within the Colorectal and General Surgeryteam and across the Trust especially with respect to intestinal failuresurgery.

In this regard there are established close links with vascularradiology, plastic surgery and urology which the post-holder will need tomaintain and develop further in order to optimise outcomes for complexintestinal failure patients.

To work with colleagues in Colorectal andGeneral Surgery to deliver acute on call for 3 - 4 days per on-call period.This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds duringnormal working hours.

To contribute to research, teaching andnew developments within the department.





The post holder will be encouraged tofacilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going inthe department.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

Service Delivery

General

TheTrust expects consultants to deliver clinical service as agreed withcommissioners and other stakeholders.This will include :

meeting the objectives of the post(see above)

continuously improving the qualityand efficiency of personal and team practice

working with other staff and teams toensure that the various criteria for service delivery are met, such as

o achieving the best clinical outcomeswithin the resources available

o waiting times

o infection control standards

Consultantsin LTHT are line managed by their specialty Lead Clinician working inconjunction with a Business Manager.This specialty team is then managed alongside a number of otherspecialties in a Clinical Service (or Support) Unit (CSU) led by a ClinicalDirector as the responsible person, and supported by a full time GeneralManager and a full time Head of Nursing.

TheClinical Director and their team report operationally to the Deputy ChiefExecutive / Chief Nurse (Deputy CEO / CN). The Clinical Director will workclosely with the Deputy CEO / CN team which includes the Medical Director forOperations, Nurse Director for Operations, four Assistant Directors ofOperations (ADOs) and a Performance Team, with each ADO aligned to specificCSUs.

Professionally,consultants report to Dr Phil Wood, Chief Medical Officer.

Essential

- Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via : CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) CESR (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process

Experience

Essential

Should have completed a recognised training programme in General Surgery with a Colorectal subspecialty interest.

Qualifications

Essential

- MB BS (or equivalent).
- FRCS or equivalent qualification.
- CCT with subspecialty accreditation in Colorectal Surgery (or within six months of same) or equivalent qualification.

Desirable

Relevant higher degree
