£34,000 - £40,000 per annum, dependent on experience

About the Centre for British Photography

Established in 2020, the Centre for British Photography (CBP, UK registered charity number 1190955) presents an expansive overview of the diversity of photographic practices in Britain from a range of voices past and present. Its mission is to support all kinds of photographic practices in Britain and to provide platforms for these contributions that are educational, inclusive and inspiring for the benefit of all audiences.





It has a particular focus on supporting the practices of women and emerging artists working in photography. It accomplishes these aims through community engagement, mentoring, grants, educational resources, exhibitions and events.

Overview

We are looking for a dynamic Director of Development and Strategy who will be critical to the delivery of Centre for British Photography’s mission and vision. The Director of Development and Strategy will work closely with the Founding Director and other Trustees in all aspects of strategic planning, with the specific responsibility of advancing the charity’s mission and fundraising for CBP’s permanent home.

At present, the charity does not have a physical space; initially this role is a hybrid one where the successful candidate will WFH and attend meetings and events in Greater London area. The role’s emphasis is to build the charity and secure the funding for a permanent space.

Key areas of responsibility

Strategy







- Work closely with the Director and Trustees to evolve and execute the overall business and strategic plan
- With the Director, craft and implement a fundraising strategy to support the strategic vision and financial sustainability of the organisation
- Ensure that ambitious and realistic financial targets are set out and monitored and that the charity’s mission is embedded throughout all activities
- Forge strategic partnerships; instigate and manage the development of these relationships and implement activities to advance our mission

Fundraising

- Manage all aspects of fundraising including individual giving, corporate sponsorship, government grants, trusts and foundation giving, and dynamic fundraising activities
- Research, identify and cultivate fundraising opportunities, proactively seek,





engage and manage contacts, create persuasive fundraising materials, develop and implement bespoke cultivation of specific donors and prospects with the aim of forging and deepening contacts’ relationship with the charity
- Oversee and contribute to bid writing for grant and trust applications
- Regularly communicate with donors and prospects, take the lead in writing and sharing regular updates with contacts including quarterly, yearly and end of programming reports

General

- Attend conferences, community meetings, funding fairs and networking events, attend Centre for British Photography events and be a part of the cultural life of the organisation






- Have a thorough working knowledge of the organisation’s current business plan; work closely with the team to achieve its financial goals, including both funded and earned income mechanisms and targets

What we are looking for

The successful candidate will be an effective face-to-face fundraiser with extensive experience in securing high value donations and managing the full lifecycle of significant donor relationships across corporate, foundation, private and public sectors. You will have up-to-date knowledge of best fundraising and regulatory practices. As an advocate, you will be committed to the charity’s mission, vision and values; interested in and passionate about shaping the future of a young charity; and play a pivotal role in the development and execution of its fundraising strategy. Experience with CRMs a plus.







Desirable experience, knowledge and skills

- A minimum of five years’ senior level experience in a similar role with the arts, culture and heritage sector or a comparable field
- A willingness to utilise your professional networks and proactively grow the charity’s existing donors and prospects
- Able to work independently and collaboratively, highly motivated, able to prioritise effectively and work under pressure to meet deadlines and financial targets
- Experience in managing large external grants (NPO or equivalent) and an understanding of the current financial, cultural and political landscape
- Excellent administrative, communication and interpersonal skills; able to write clearly and persuasively, confident in public speaking,





passionate about representing the charity and advancing its mission and vision
- Proven experience of ambitious strategic planning and execution: researching, analysing data, forecasting future trends and opportunities, goal setting, ensuring consistency of approach and delivery, legal compliance and reputational protection
- Up-to-date knowledge of best practices in the charitable and arts sectors
- As a member of Centre for British Photography’s staff, you will have a passion for and an interest in photography and the arts.
