Job summary

The post holder will provide highly specialist child psychotherapy assessments, formulations and treatments to children and young people with a wide range of presentations and complex needs, in addition to generic assessments, treatments and specialist psychological advice, as well as consultation to others involved in service user care.

The post holder will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and will contribute to psychological thinking within the MDT. The clinical work is undertaken in a range of settings including clinic, community centres and educational settings.

The post holder will provide clinical supervision to other team members and trainees as required.







The post holder will utilise research skills for audit, policy, research and service development within the service.

The post holder will participate in CPD and other developmental activities, keeping up to date with relevant research and national guidance.

They will attend clinical, professional and managerial supervision.

Main duties of the job

As a clinical expert the post holder will formulate a range of treatment options based on an appropriate conceptual framework and employ methods based upon best practice evidence NICE guidelines.

To be responsible for a substantial caseload of complex assessment, treatment and consultation work. The post holder will be able to identify priorities for action in complex presentations, providing both generic work and specialist work as a child and adolescent psychotherapist.

To maintain an up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and socio-political, economic and cultural issues in relation to both the specific client group and mental health in general,





including knowledge of Child Protection Procedures.

To provide highly developed specialist psychotherapeutic assessments, based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources (including measures / rating scales, direct and indirect observation, semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and involved others.

To work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide psychotherapeutic assessments and interventions for children, adolescents and their families.

The post holder will practise with a high level of clinical expertise and within relevant Codes of Practice and ethical guidelines.

The post holder will draw on a wide range of models and techniques,





and work within the principles CYP-IAPT.

Job responsibilities







To be responsible for implementing a broad range of specialist psychotherapeutic and psychological interventions which require the formulation and modification of plans and strategies as practice and experience demands.

This will require the adjustment and refinement of complex formulations which draw on psychoanalytic, developmental and attachment based explanatory models, as well as those drawn from other disciplines such as neuroscience and psychology.

To provide expertise and specialist psychotherapeutic advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals and agencies contributing directly to service users formulation and intervention plans.

To ensure that multidisciplinary colleagues have access to a psychoanalytically based framework for understanding the care of service users.

To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment,





treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.

1. To utilise theory, evidence-based literature and research to support evidence- based and / or best practice in direct and indirect interventions, during consultations, in MDT work and during meetings.

To monitor the effectiveness of the clinical work undertaken either personally or jointly with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure that it reflects the best available evidence for practice.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Registrations

Essential

Doctoral level training in child psychotherapy, as accredited by the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP). Professional registration with the PSA.

Desirable







Additional training or qualifications in any of the major psychological therapies including CYP-IAPT training.

Skills / Abilities

Essential

Skills in the use of psychotherapy assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and / or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.

Ability to contain, explore and formulate an understanding of high levels of distress, both directly with patients and indirectly via supervision of other staff.

Experience / Knowledge

Essential







Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex data analysis as practiced within the field of child psychotherapy.

Experience of working in a CAMHS setting. Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.

Evidence of continuing professional development as required for professional registration with the PSA. Understanding of the need and rationale for using evidence based psychological therapies.

Experience of work in a multidisciplinary team. Experience of working in multi-agency contexts. Experience of providing support and consultation to other professionals.

Desirable

Experience of teaching, training and / or supervision. Knowledge of CAMHS transformation, CYPIAPT and the Thrive agenda.

Experience of working with diverse communities and within a multi-cultural setting.
