Job summary

Applications are invited to apply for a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a new post offering 10 programmed activities. Additional programmed activities may be available, but these are subject to annual discussion and agreement and do not form part of the underlying contractual agreement.

An obstetric interest (high risk pregnancy, maternal medicine, fetal medicine) or urogynaecology would be helpful. Potential applicants are invited to discuss areas of sub-specialty interest with clinical managers at the Trust prior to application.







The successful applicant will be expected to participate in teaching both under and postgraduate students associated with the University of Buckingham and will also be expected to support colleagues doing these activities as part of his or her arranged job plan.

Main duties of the job

- To develop an area of special interest in Obstetrics or urogynaecology
- To participate in Consultant Labour Ward and emergency gynaecology cover and on-call as per the rota
- The successful candidate will be expected to be motivated and committed to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services.
- Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Job description

Job responsibilities

There are 13 Consultant Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, 5 Specialist Trainees and 11 Trust Doctors at registrar level.

There is 2 tier registrar rota during the day and night.





The approximate number of births is around 4000.

The appointee will be encouraged to develop a subspeciality interest (urogynaecology or obstetrics special interest would be helpful)

There will be 1 in 12 on-call rota commitments including Labour Ward hot week (1in 12) and an Emergency Gynae hot week (1in 13, AM session only).

Please note that full GMC registration and license to practice is an essential for this role. If you do not currently have GMC registration, but you are in the process of applying, please use the supporting information section of the application form to provide an update about the status of your GMC application.

Candidates without GMC registration at the time of shortlisting will not be considered.

Qualifications / Registrations

Essential

- Full GMC registration
- MRCOG or appropriate specialist qualification
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC

Desirable

Further Higher Degree

Experience / training

Essential

Clinical training and experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology equivalent that required for a UK CCST

Desirable

Candidates will be encouraged to maintain or develop a subspecialty skill : Urogynaecology : ATSM in Urogynaecology &Vaginal; Surgery Obstetrics special interest ATSM in Obstetric Medicine, Fetal Medicine, High Risk pregnancy

Knowledge

Essential

- Appropriate level of clinical knowledge






- Knowledge and application of up to date evidence based practice
- Understanding of clinical risk management and governance

Desirable

- IT Skills
- Breadth of experience within and outside speciality

Clinical Skill

Essential

Clinical skills and experience to undertake a consultant post in NHS

Desirable

Previous experience at consultant level

Communication Skills and Teaching

Essential

- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
- Evidence of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Ability to work constructively in a team environment
- Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients

Desirable







- A proven background in organising and delivering undergraduate and post- graduate teaching and research with evidence of training for the role is highly desirable
- A qualification in Medical Education, such as a Diploma

Leadership Skills

Essential

- To motivate and develop both medical staff and non-medical staff
- Ability to identify and implement service development and change

Desirable

Interest in Medical management

- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
