Job summary
The Brent Community Paediatric Team
The Brent Community Paediatric Team sits within Brent Children's Clinical Service Unit (CSU) alongside other specialist community services including Children's Community Nursing, Looked After Children, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy and the 0-19 team which provides universal services such as Health Visiting and School Nursing.
The CSU sits within the Outer Northwest Division.
The London Borough of Brent has a population of 336,659 and a population density of persons per hectare. People under 18 make up 21% of the population and people aged 65 and over make up 10% of the population.
Compared with the England average,
Brent has a "bulge" in the working age population, with fewer older people. This tends to be caused by movement into the borough for work, followed by movement away from the borough as people get older and retire.

Main duties of the job
Job Purpose
This is a 10 PA post for a Specialist Doctor with a special interest in Neurodevelopment / disability and Complex Care needs.
The post holder will work in the Community contributing to the Neurodisability service, Complex Care and the assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental presentation, motor disorders and / or complex needs.
There is no acute on-call commitment attached to this post.
The Brent Child Development Team is well supported by a very experienced team of therapists and has good cross agency relationships.
The post holder will manage a caseload of new and existing CYP and provide a CYP centred service in the areas of child development, neurodisability, social communication assessments for children under 5 years and statutory assessments of Special Education Needs (EHCP Needs assessments).
The post holder will take an active role, together with colleagues, in seeing CYP where there are child protection concerns regarding child abuse (excluding child sexual abuse) and neglect.
The post holder will undertake safeguarding medical assessments for CYP who are referred by Brent Local Authority and share the child protection medical on call rota with colleagues during working hours of Mon-Fri, 9-5pm.
The post holder will work with the consultants in the team to ensure the smooth running of a clinically strong and professional service to meet the needs of CYP in Brent and will participate in the SpR teaching and induction programmes.

- To contribute to the provision of the Child Development Service within the Child Development Team for complex physical, neuro-disability and complex needs.
- To support the assessment and management of children with cerebral palsy and other neuro-disabilities.
- To assess and manage children with neuro-disability and complex needs in close collaboration with therapy, education, and primary care colleagues.
- To manage a caseload in designated local special needs school(s).
- To complete and review education and health care plans.

Essential
- Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practise
- MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent or MRCGP
Desirable
- Higher degree MSc, MD or other higher degree
- DCH, DCCH other relevant diplomas
Experience
Essential
- Have relevant experience in the clinical management of children (including those with neuro-developmental, emotional, behavioural and attachment difficulties), child protection, and adult health issues pertinent to parenting.
- Completed significant years of medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification
- Knowledge and participation in CPD.
- Able to apply knowledge.
- Meet the requirement of the GMC's "Good Medical Practice".
- Experience of NHS and knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS.
Desirable
- Significant experience in relevant specialty (Acute or Community Paediatrics).
- Wider experience, research and training in subspecialty area or area allied to community child health, for example general practice, child mental health, paediatric neurology or neurodisability.
- Knowledge of Special Educational Needs procedures, health service responsibilities and recent changes to SEND.
- Training is available, but a certain level of experience is still expected.

- Willing to manage a caseload of CYP with neurodisability and complex needs with support from a consultant supervisor, as required.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently but know when to seek support from consultant and other MDT colleagues.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, report writing, presentation skills, behavioural change skills.
- Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence.
- Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors.
- Able to make decisions involving complex facts and situations, plus manage / reconcile conflict.
- Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to manage time effectively, set priorities, meet deadlines and deal with complex work pressures, demands and interruptions.
- Knowledge of diversity issues and ability to work with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
- A forward thinking, creative and flexible approach.
Desirable
- Special interest in a relevant area of community child health.
- Knowledge of clinical governance and its implications for services, including experience of quality issues, research and audit.
