Macmillan Clinical Psychologist / Counselling Psychologist in Cancer and Palliative Care- 8A post
This is a Band 8a post, however, we also welcome applications from those candidates at a Band 7 level who could progress on a development / preceptorship scheme to the full 8a post over a 12-24 month period
An opportunity has arisen to join the Macmillan Psycho-oncology Service at London North West Healthcare Trust as a Band 8a Practitioner Psychologist, full time.
The role would suit a candidate who is keen to develop a wide variety of both clinical health psychology and service development skills, knowledge and experience.
Those who are at Band 7 level (including those who are newly qualified)
are welcome to apply for, and be considered for, this post under a preceptorship-development model.
The candidate would be supported through job planning and reviews to meet identified objectives of the post in order to progress towards the full Band 8a role.
The role will involve teaching, supervision and benefit from internal and external CPD. The post holder will be managed and supervised by the Macmillan Psycho-oncology Lead and will work alongside the Clinical and Counselling Psychologists and an Assistant Psychologist.

Main duties of the job
The Macmillan Psycho-oncology Service (MPS) operates within a model of stepped care and is therefore well integrated into the wider staff team of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.
Specifically, the post holder will :
o Provide a highly specialist psychology service to cancer and palliative care patients including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.
o Contribute to enabling other staff, service users and carers from diverse backgrounds to flourish by working to create a psychologically safe and informed environment.
o Initiate and collaborate in service evaluation, audit and research.
o To provide clinical supervision, consultation and training for MDT staff and other psychological practitioners
o Work as an autonomous professional within BPS and HCPC guidelines and codes of conduct, and guided by the policies, standards and procedures of the service, Psychological Services Network and Trust, taking responsibility for interpreting policies within defined parameters.

Education / Qualifications
Essential
doctoral level training in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS.
Eligible for BPS Chartered Psychology Status and registered with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist.

Desirable
- Formal training in supervision of trainee psychologists
- Post-doctoral training in models specifically relevant to cancer & palliative care, ACT, CFT, MBSR.
- Formal training in quality improvement methodologies
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
- oExperience of working within clinical health psychology services
- oExperience of applying clinical or counselling psychology in culturally diverse contexts.
- oExperience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting with the full range of clinical severity across the full range of care settings including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
- oExperience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients' psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a multi-disciplinary care plan.
- oExperience of teaching, training and / or professional and clinical supervision.
- oDoctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, and two or more distinct psychological therapies
- oKnowledge of legislation / healthcare guidelines and their implications for both clinical practice and professional management in relation to the client group and mental health
Desirable
- Experience working in specialist cancer & palliative care services
- Experience of contributing to or leading service development / quality improvement projects
- Experience of involving and working with patients / service users
- Experience of working in / with third-sector cancer support and information providers
- Experience with projects focused on hospital staff skill development or wellbeing
- Peer-reviewed publications and / or grant awards, in topics relevant to psycho-oncology

- oAbility to articulate and interpret the role of clinical health psychology based upon a good understanding of government and professional guidelines / policy.
- oSkills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management,
including neuropsychological assessment and interpretation, frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
- oHighly developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS.
- oSkills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
- oSkills in the application of cognitive- behavioural and systemic approaches to mental health. Able to demonstrate a thorough understanding, and experience of practice.
- oFamiliar with information technology and able to develop and use multi-media materials for presentations in public, professional and academic settings.
