Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 4 AssistantPractioner to work jointly within the Nutrition and Dietetics (N&D;) andSpeech and Language Therapy (SLT) Oncology team.
The role will be based atBarnsley Hospital.
The post holder will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team consisting ofDietitians, Speech and Language Therapists, Nurses and Doctors, to provideholistic care to patients across the cancer pathway.
The post will cover mainlyGI cancers and lung cancers and some work with patients who have a diagnosis ofhead & neck, working with speech therapy.
The successfulcandidate will have previous experience working in a clinical setting,
withexcellent communication skills and a real desire to support patients as they gothrough their treatment journey.
They will be responsible for planning and prioritisingtheir own day; within the allocated workload and resources and will hold theirown caseload and have their own clinics.

Main duties of the job
To provide therapy interventions andimplement programmes of care for lung, GI and Head & Neck cancer
To take action relative to apatients health and care needs when needing speech and language therapy anddietetic intervention before, during and after their cancer treatment fornutrition support, gastrostomy tube management and communication.
To work across the cancer pathway toprovide rehabilitation therapy focused support for patients about to undergocancer treatment
To support self-management includingpatient education and support to manage the consequences of treatment of dietand fluid intake.
To deliver high standards ofcoordinated, personalised care whilst working as an integral member of the Headand Neck cancer team
To work within the specialistservices of Lung, GI (upper and lower GI and Head and Neck Cancer MDTsincluding Clinical Nurse Specialists, support workers, surgeons, oncologists,Speech and Language Therapists and ward Dietitians promoting effectiveinter-professional and multi-disciplinary team working within the scope of therole.
To provide support to people at everystage of their cancer journey, this may include signposting them to otherservices including psychology,
cancer care centres, physiotherapy and tissue viability
To contribute to audits and serviceevaluations, gathering patient feedback assess the effectiveness of care andinform service delivery

Qualifications
Essential
- Foundation degree Health and
- Social Care, or equivalent level 5 qualification; plus, A-levels and GCSEs or equivalent(s), including Functional Skills (level 2)
- Or as a level 5 apprenticeship, such as the Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship.
- Relevant clinical experience eg. cancer pathways, Speech Therapy or Dietetic services.
- English and Maths pass grade at GCSE or equivalent examination board eg Functional Skills Level 2 Care Certificate (or studying towards)
- Current full driving licence
Desirable
- Completed recognised IT course ECDL / Elite / MOST
- Level 4 dysphagia competencies, or evidence towards Dietetic competencies.
Experience
Essential
Be able to demonstrate substantial experience working within Speech Therapy or Dietetics.
Knowledge and Awareness
Essential
- Understanding of the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace
- Understanding of the risk assessment process Understanding of the role of Speech & Language Therapy and / or Dietetics in the assessment and management of nutrition, swallowing and communication problems.
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance and implications for patient care
- Able to recognise when guidance and support is required and initiate appropriate escalation processes.
Desirable
- Awareness of policies and procedures relevant to own area of practice in cancer services
- Has an awareness of legal frameworks and strategies relating to governing cancer and work / employment, including the Equality Act (2010) and Improving Outcomes : A Strategy for Cancer and other national cancer policies
- Knowledge of cancer pathways / targets 62 day target and optimal pathways
- Knowledge and evidence of participation in clinical audit and evidence gathering methods.
- Awareness and understanding of relevant health and Social Care legislation
- Knowledge of cancer, terminology, cancer treatments, interventions and the potential long-term effects
- Demonstrates knowledge of equipment available and able to assess and fit where applicable
